The middle ground always sounds reasonable, one nation and so on but the reality of decision making is not there. Most political questions are by their nature polarized. In the EU or not, tax cuts or not, privatisation or not. The middle ground is privatisation of the NHS by stealth or public private corporations where in effect we pay large corporations and just add to their bank balance. The so called middle ground is the worst of all worlds. However if you are talking about pulling away from the extremes of left and right then I am with you but some changes have to be radical. Changing our voting system is radical but it would produce less polarized politics that you might prefer. Scottish Independence is radical but that could also produce less polarisation for Scotland and England. The middle ground is where most people and ideas die. To progress you have to chose a side I'm afraid, it's the nature of human beings.

He's right about a lot of it, but some of his conclusions are a bit off, in my opinion. Conflating Blair and Starmer with Thatcher and Reagan is just silly, for a start. We also don't need a push for radical and outlandish ideas, either. We've gone massively, ludicrously downhill in a very short space of time. The voting public want things to improve, but they're not interested in enormous changes to get it. They want stability and progress in their finances and public services. They won't vote for what he's calling for.

The one single move available to a Labour administration, to ensure stable and hopefully, progressive and sustainable growth, would be to introduce PR. No more minority governments reflecting the interests of a minority of the population. Only then will we have sufficient stability to address the nation's issues, rather than the current system of limping from election to election governed by administrations employing short term policies to enable them to win in 4 or 5 years' time.
Is it just me or should the Lib Dems be doing more to pick up some of this Tory drop-off? The Conservative vote for polling really can't go much lower. Are their yellow mates being quiet or are the media just not covering them at all?
I think the casualty of truth and fact is the underlying main problem which in turn promotes an environment for polarisation. For example, the EU's approach to the vaccine procurement and rollout would've had zero effect on the UK's excess deaths. This is because whilst in the EU, the UK’s independent Medicines and Healthcare products Regulatory Agency (MHRA) had the authority to make the same decisions on their own because EU law already allowed it. In fact we were still under EU Law at the time of the rollout. MHAR themselves confirmed all of this. The Jacob Ress Mogg rhetoric at the time was a complete fabrication.
I have never advocated that the EU is/was perfect by any means. It is institutionally as vulnerable to corruption as any given administration. However, it was always clear from the outset that UK leaving on the basis of an advisory referendum 'won' by a bare majority of less than 35% of the population, founded on the lies of an extreme political fringe was always going to end in tears. The EU needs reform, but the simple fact is that the UK had the best of all membership cards and chose to force themselves out, believing a range of lies about the supposed influence of the EU over UK sovereignty. And as regards the vaccine rollout, I think you'll find that was more of a Tortoise & Hare scenario, as the actual final death toll will testify. The UK may have had the access to the vaccine sooner, but the original mismanagement of the Pandemic by Johnson's Gov and the corruption linked to the purchase of PPE etc was directly responsible for the UK topping the death tolls. I couldn't agree more with this, but they are likely to win such a landslide that they won't have the foresight to see that the level of support that this catastrophic tory government has handed them is unsustainable.
