Why can't we be grown up about tax? It is said to be political suicide to increase the basic and higher income tax rates, yet the multitude of taxes we pay as a "basket" continually increases so that the total bill is higher than ever. For me I'd say aim toward a single tax and be honest about what people pay. After all these rises have tended to hurt some of the less able to pay (for example VAT where everyone effectively pays the same for basic goods). It's apparently ok to try and rationalise the benefits system with universal credit (probably a good idea but horrendous implementation), so why not the tax system too? To claim tax (meaning income tax) is this level or that level is irrelevant without knowing how much VAT, NI, Council Tax etc has changed. As I say, be up front and honest about it.

Because that wouldn't suit the Tory donors and other rich people.
Regressive taxes increase across the board, as does tax "avoidance" and dubious schemes to go with it.

Usmanov moved all of his property into trusts to dodge sanctions, by his own admittance.
There shouldn't be any opportunity to do such a thing.
Obscuration is made simple by design.

Slight sideline, but why can't Northern Ireland be involved?
If it's just the size of Windsor Park, then couldn't that be addressed?
It's not like England would need to invest in any stadium adjustments.

Apparently the situation in Ukraine has sorted itself out since yesterday

That's the only logical reason why the BBC devoted 2/3 of the Six O'Clock News to gobbling Sunak's nob

Don't worry, that 1p tax break in an election year will balance that out...

Madeleine Albright, former US Secretary of State, has died at the age of 84:

What the **** is this ****, though?
"Albright was also champion of Nato expansion, overseeing the addition of Poland, Hungary and Czechoslovakia in 1999 - a move whose repercussions are being keenly felt today."
Can we not have BBC journalists echoing Putin's bullshit, please?
