Very true Goldie. In that vein, hands up who voted with a pencil in last month's referendum![]()
There's a distinction between a conspiracy theory and prudence, Tooting - I was imprudent, and voted with a pencil

It seems there's a military coup taking place in Turkey, bridges over the Bosphorus are sealed and jets flying low over the city in Istanbul...
Bizarrely, it's what Turkish liberals have been hoping for. Was talking to one of my Turkish colleagues a couple of weeks ago, a completely non Muslim western lady, who is totally anti Erdogan, and she was saying it's only a matter of time before the military have enough of him. Particularly as he shows no respect to Ataturk, apparently Erdogan wants to be the 'father of the country', can't even bring himself to say Ataturks name.Tanks blocking the airports... Generals who guard secularism jealously want to restore democracy... hmmm
Looks like another Egypt
Boris is going to be busy. At least he can visit his relatives while he's over there
Ultimate ironic coincidence - in his episode of BBC's Who Do You Think You Are, it transpired that the great grandfather of Boris Johnson was Osman Wilfred (Ali) Kemal, a journalist who was deeply involved in the Ataturk regime and movement - an involvement that ultimately cost him his life...Bizarrely, it's what Turkish liberals have been hoping for. Now we will see how fanatical the Turkish Islamists are. Hopefully the military are strong enough to prevent a civil war without being too brutal. They have a fairly decent record of taking over, making institutional changes, then handing back to civilian government.
bloody hell, what a mad day.
Been thinking exactly the same thing Goldie. Might come if the coup ringleaders face incredibly harsh punishment - execution.Tweet by Kevin Maguire on Turkey:
"Big risk Erdogan will exploit military rebellion to stamp on political dissent & silence media. Coup & counter both disasters for democracy."
Can't help but hope the flagging military coup gets a boost from a wider section of the Turkish armed forces, so Erdogan can be sent into exile and the country starts with a clean sheet. But perhaps that's just naive of me.
No. Perhaps his dagger. But heaven help us if he did. As he is bound to have misjudged the tea leaves on the morning that he did. I cannot think of a greater cock up that any politician has made than his bid for power. It's on days like today, you need a grown up as Foreign secretary. Why not give it to Gove if it has to be a Brexiteer, you know he'll read his briefs beforehand and he won't put his foot in it.

They will be complaining about something else next month. NHS, Uni Fees or capitalism. They had their chance and didn't turn up.
