That was the judge's thinking, Beth. You get concessions for pleading guilty early.

Point 24 in the judges summing up does indeed show you are correct Goldie.
If she would have pleaded guilty originally at magistrates court they would have been able to give a suspended sentence.
However as she did not, the judges hands were tied and that option was taken away

I think the timing should have been taken into account more than it appears to have been. Lockdowns and minimal access to face-to-face help must have left her feeling isolated and desperate. Yes by the time it got to 30+ weeks she should’ve probably had the baby and then put him/her up for adoption if necessary but as someone who’ll never be in that decision it must be a horrific call to have to make. Again, I don’t see what banging her up for 14 months or more does for anyone. Even if a custodial sentence was somehow necessary, make it a slap on the wrist 28 days or something.

With a female judge I think there’d have been a very different outcome.

I'm not sure you're right about a female judge. There are a lot of women who, while accepting abortion law as it is and being sympathetic to any young woman who has to act within it, are maternally protective of the rights of unborn children who are older than the prescribed 24 weeks.

Ah, well researched, Stainsey. The judgement is clearly written, and this woman would have been well advised to have pled guilty, even to a lesser charge, early in the prosecution. She'd be at home now with her family if she had.

To have a full picture...we need to know when the charge was changed from the higher charge of " child destruction" to the later alternative charge of "administering drugs or using instruments to procure abortion".

If she pleaded not guilty at the magistrates court to the higher charge, but by the time the court got to the high court it was a lesser charge, to which she pleaded guilty.

The ruling may or may not apply.

We will see in the appeal court

My understanding is that the charge didn't change, but at trial, her barrister offered a guilty plea to a different charge and prosecutors accepted it.

Yes, you're right, Beth, an appeal will be interesting

****ing awful woman.

In other news....."In the name of Jesus", is what the nutter in France supposedly shouted as he stabbed those kids.

****ing religion!!

“The Annecy terrorist is a Syrian Muslim named Selwan Majd…,” translated from “Le terroriste d’Annecy serait un Syrien musulman nommé Selwan Majd…,” by Christine Tasin, Resistance Républicaine, June 12, 2023:

Here is what is circulating from Syrians living in France and Germany who recognized the madman of Allah. And this was confirmed by relatives of Father Boulad in Alexandria…

To be continued.

From the beginning we said that it cannot be a Christian… and that it has the signs of being done by a Muslim…

The assailant is said to be a Syrian refugee named Selwan Majd…

He claimed his name was Abd El-Messih Hanoun, but his real name is “Selwan Majd,” a refugee from Al-Hasakah in northern Syria.

He had traveled to Turkey with false papers where he met a Swedish tourist and made her believe he was a Muslim convert to Christianity.

He married her in Sweden under the false Christian name, but the Swedish authorities doubted him and refused to grant him citizenship, later his wife separated from him.

In France, he went to seek help in a church but the church also doubted him.

John Sopel, commenting on the latest charges against Trump, reckons that there are only two possible outcomes - in two years time, he will either be in the White House or in jail. The suggestion being that the only way he avoids jail is to win the election and pardon himself. Democracy.

**** me, it's worse than I thought. Apparently, he can still run for President from a jail cell!

So, he's found guilty and jailed, he continues to run for President, the septics are bonkers enough to elect him again and his first act as POTUS is to pardon himself. He walks out of jail and back into the White House.

****ing mad.

I’d like to see that happen just to read your posts at the time, Strolls.

One of the largest council tax rises in England is South Cambridgeshire. Run by the Lib Dem's, council workers now only work a 4 day week. So presumably the council has to employ extra employees to fill in. I'll bet the Libs won't be running the council after the next local election.

what percentage of our Council Tax goes into their pensions? I'm paying enough for a declining service as it is

Probably not. There are loads of benefits to a four day week. No one does anything on a Friday afternoon anyway.

Less commuting, happier employees, better retention of staff, health benefits (mental and physical) and more.

It’s not right for everyone but generally if you treat your staff like adults they’ll do what they need to do and get the job done regardless of whether in an office or not or doing 5x8 hour shifts/4x10 hours.
