I haven’t really thought it through to be honest, it was just the spectacle of the Tories resorting to this type of tacit admission that free market capitalism leads to suffering that I found arresting. Though I suppose all the interventions during COVID, the state taking over failing rail companies and whatever they are plying at with energy prices all say the same thing - our core belief is bullshit. And we know it, but we still believe ultimately it will work. Classic doublethink.
No one ideology is perfect for everyone or even anyone. We’ll all disagree as to what is the best amount of capitalism or socialism or any -ism but despite some of my beliefs I think capitalism can be a force for good and without it we wouldn’t have developed half as much as a human race, positively or not.
The problem with it, very broadly, is that the people who benefit are usually those who need the benefit the least and those who suffer can least afford it. In good times that negative isn’t that noticeable- we’ll always have some poverty but not loads. Right now the negatives of capitalism are taking root more than any time in my life and maybe any of our lives. How much of that is due to the Tories is a debate. I’d say quite a lot.
