Very sad news with Russia invading Ukraine today.
The talk in the papers say to take back all countries who broke away from the Soviet Union, including Poland.

Would not surprise me to see China attack Taiwan at the same time an try to catch America, the UK and the coalition of the world countries off guard.

Your thoughts and updates…

Where's our resident Putin apologist now?

This is awful.
This is where we pay the price for letting Putin destroy any effective internal opposition. We just have to keep reminding ourselves that this isn’t ‘the Russians’ it’s Putin and his cronies. I’ve seen numerous vox pops where the Russian in the street was incredulous at the idea of attacking fellow Slavs.

I must say again I cant believe he decided to attack. Always thought he was just ‘trying it on’ to get something in return. I guess he has put himself in a weird position. Lets hope that the Ukrainians give him a bloody nose. The west need to stand firm against these tin pot dictators.

My thoughts - it's a ****ing mess

The West pandered and pacified Putin for years, to the extent he thinks he's a god and untouchable.

If the West put boots on the ground, it's going to get really messy. If they don't put boots on the ground, then Putin will know we haven't got the guts for a fight and will continue to expand his empire. This would basically give China a green light to go for it too.

The UN is too weak to stop this, and I fear NATO don't have the bottle

I couldn’t see Putin backing down - it’s not in his DNA. The rest of the world has to show its strength against this aggressive Russian bear.
If it’s going to be through economic actions they better get on with it and ensure it hurts him and his cronies (and not the everyday Russian).
Seems an odd way to stop someone hellbent on killing. Modern warfare?

Yes hopefully someone in Russia will know what a prat he is and get rid. Interesting listen to the Russian people being interviewed in a market thinking its all the fault of the US? <doh> The propaganda machine is still working well in Russia.

Mods, can I suggest that this thread is merged with the politics one? Good points being made but easier for us to keep them in one place.

To be honest, l had not looked on the politics thread and thought it warranted it own thread but happy either way. The main thing is we are there for those who may be affected.
Good to hear peoples thoughts.

I tend to think Russia & China have purposely waited till the end of the Olympics and expect China to stake their claims amongst this confusion.

They know Biden is weak & ineffective and a double act of war would cause major chaos.

Biden was weak on Afghanistan but seems to be talking strong on this. Maybe someone in the US had a word with him?
