You haven't a clue what you're talking about when it comes to Ireland. You could write on the back of a postage stamp what you know about this country and the border. Ireland was never a Brexit bargaining chip except to Brexiteers. The E.U. rowed in behind what we wanted from day one of the Brexit negotiations and supported us 100%. That grates Brexiteers. We got the open border just as we wanted. We got a trade deal with the U.K. just as we wanted. The mess Ursula Von Der Leyen made with the vaccines cock up has been rectified. Our Taoiseach has made the EU put in place procedures to ensure anything that threatens the open border will in future be referred to the Irish Government before Brussels makes any more statements or takes any actions. We have an American president who supports our desire to keep an open border and who has confirmed anything that the UK do that affects that, there will be trade implications.
Every single American tech company worth anything is already based here simply because we ARE IN THE E.U. Being here gives them access to a market of 440m people with no tariffs etc. As recently as 6 months ago, Ireland got the largest amount of Foreign Direct Investment of any country - in the world. Not bad for a small country of 5m people. Yes Biden has just taken over in the US. Make no mistake, he will be a friend to this country before any other.
That is the reality of where we are here.
I could answer this in many ways but I will simply say you last comment speaks volumes of what you don't actually know? We will have to wait and see what President Biden does.
Considering Johnston called Obama "THE KENYAN" when Biden was Vice President previously, I doubt Bojo will be receiving a Birthday card from Biden., especially with Kemela Harris as his V.P.
I believe that, as much as I believed that Trump was going to give us the biggest ever deal (although for all his faults he did like a deal). Biden won't care a toot about Ireland or any other country unless he gets the best deal for the US. It's nice when presidents say stuff but at the end of the day it's down to money and deal. The UK is ranked 5th in terms of GDP and Ireland 29th. You may get a few good deals from the US and good luck to you but they will never be the same size as the ones we get, sorry, it just how it is. Like PM's, Presidents come and go but under them are a team making deals that will benifit the country. If you really know about America you will know that they don't trust the EU.
For me, Ireland has 2 problems, firstly as I have said the US doesn't like or trust the EU. Even today the EU is upsetting the US by opting to use vaccines from China (this maybe a bluff). The second problem is that EU crapped on Ireland over the vaccines. They were irrelevant and not even incorporated in the decision making. You may spin it how you like but I heard the Irish PM on the Marr show the Sunday after and he said the EU didn't consult him first. Even that Coveney fella said the same. This tells me what I already know about Irelands place in the EU. That's honesty.

Listen Ellers, I am sure you know, race is a big issue in the U.S. right now. Biden has stated that one of the priorities of his Administration is to address the racial inequality in America after the mess left by Trump. Everything he and Harris do, any racial implications will be taken into account. Bojo called Obama "the Kenyan" as a way of racially putting him down and making him out to be anti-British as he came from an ex-British colony when in fact he was born in Hawaii. Trump called Obama the Kenyan and Bojo followed suit. Biden will take that into account when it comes to negotiating a trade deal with the UK. Even when the UK were in the EU, Ireland still got far more American foreign direct investment. The fact that the UK is the 5th biggest economy will mean the U.S. will want a trade deal agreed, but unlike Trump, you are not a priority for Biden and he has stated that the Irish border and peace in NI comes ahead of any trade deal.
What makes you think the U.S. doesn't trust the EU? Trump was an anti-EU person who thought the sun shone out of Farage's arse. As both of them are gone now and totally irrelevant that anti-EU stance is not official American policy anymore. The fact that Biden is very much pro-EU as all recent U.S. president's have been (apart from Trump) means relations with the E.U. will return to normal.
Lastly, the EU did not crap on Ireland. An inexperienced Commission made a mistake by threatening Article 16 in the row over vaccines. Everybody acknowledges that was the wrong thing to do and procedures have been put in place to ensure it does not happen again. We are only 1% of the EU population but the fact we got the other 99% to support what we wanted means we do hold some influence and punch above our weight for such a small nation.

Yeah the Eurozone probably is in the **** given there’s been a pandemic on for a year. At least they, relatively speaking, don’t have the negative impact of the Tory hard Brexit on top of that. You pretend like our economy is absolutely thriving in comparison or that it’s good for us if our nearest neighbours aren’t growing.
They didn’t really cock up. They were too conservative and our gamble has paid off, albeit expensively but it was a gamble worth making which I said at the time.
They arguably used Ireland as a pawn for about three hours. We keep doing it over and over again but stupid Brexit fanatic old ****s refuse to acknowledge that bit.

With all due respect Finglas, the fact that the Irish were not consulted on such a delicate issue should really tell you something? If you want to brush over this then fine, but don't think for one minute the EU Commission are actually bothered about Ireland when they want to do something.
As for the EU/US relations I think you need to read up a bit more on that as only yesterday I watched US news and they mentioned relations with the EU. The new deal with China is a concern according to the same program.
As for Biden, he won't give a toot about any country unless it means America will prosper. If you think some remark about Obama from Boris will stop deal with the UK then you seriously need to open your eyes. They US makes deals with countries that bomb the crap out of people. It all comes down to money and that the US keeps people working for the next elections.

The fact that Ireland weren't consulted tells me one thing. Ursula Von Der Leyen is very inexperienced and she should not have done what she done. The fact that you and other Brexiteers threw a hissy fit at the time tells me everything about your EU bashing objectives. Are the EU commission bothered about Ireland, yes absolutely they are. They almost made a grave error but thankfully for all our sakes, the Irish Government put them right and I doubt anything like it will happen again. I hope Von Der Leyen has learnt from her serious mistake. If not and she repeats it, she will be removed. I have no doubt about that.
As regards US/EU relations, which channel did you watch? Fox News perhaps - Trump's mouthpiece channel? Thank god I'm not so easily influenced by news I seen yesterday or articles I read in right wing newspapers or the bloke I heard on the radio or my beat mate's cousin. The EU and US have always been big trading partners even under the 4 years of Trump despite his anti-EU rhetoric. Go read about that Ellers and stop filling us with your own anti-EU rubbish. Everything you see, hear or listen to you put an anti-EU slant on it.

Trump! not that old chestnut. I think you will find that I said recently that 'Biden is more presidential than trump and that America has a safer pair of hands in charge'. I know a couple on here thought differently but I couldn't care, as it's not my country. I just thought he was vilified before he was even in office.
Now, instead of trying to heal the country they are going after Trump which is actually causing more problems. So much for the 'heal the country speech'?
There is a worldwide pandemic going on with hundreds of thousands of Americans dead. Whether a Volkswagon car costs an extra $500 more in the US or not is not one of Biden's priorities.
As soon as the pandemic is over, I am sure both sides will sit down and reverse some of the tariffs for their mutual benefit.
