Next you’ll be having QPR supporters singing ‘We’re proud of you Rangers’ when the team win a match....cheeky ****s..they (the supporters) had **** all to do with it.

My son won a swimming tournament. He got up at 6am every weekend for practice. I had nothing t do with it (bar the odd lift) But I was so proud of him when he won.
Sadly you get people who just want to sound clever and don't fully understand the implications. As for the comedian... that stoner act was done better 20 odd years ago.

You did though didn't you he is your son!! You brought him up, you are a massive influence on his life, with QPR you pay into it, you cheer the team on, so yes you even have an influence there!!
I'm not saying you are wrong to proud of something you had **** all to do with, there are just some of us that have a differing opinion to pride. However nice of you trying to score cheap points by claiming he was mocking those who lost their life in battle.... when he did nothing of the sort
Nothing wrong with taking pride in ‘us’ winning a war just as there’s nothing wrong with taking pride in ‘us’ winning the League Cup.
There is a problem with moronic rhetoric along the lines of “forcing through a hard Brexit is our generation’s WWII”.
Not trying to be argumentative but is it still ok, for example, to be proud of what my granddad did in the war ??....’cos I had no influence at all in that.

I was thinking about this before this debate started. It’s an odd phrase ‘to be proud of xxxx’, because it does seem to imply some personal contribution to what you are proud of. Sometimes you do make a contribution, sometimes you don’t. I’m probably over thinking this, but it could be more accurate to say ‘I’m proud to have xxx relationship with xxx’ - ‘I’m proud to be his grandson’ or ‘I’m proud to be British’ if you want (although pride in an accident of birth is a bit weird for me).
What caught my eye earlier on in the thread was the assertion that pride or ‘belief’ (I really don’t get that one) in the country has something to do with being ‘better than’ other countries. It doesn’t, and that’s the line between patriotism and nationalism.

I don't think it's that odd to be proud to be British for what we've achieved...as long as you're willing to be equally ashamed of the various atrocities committed by Britain.
I think what you originally said has now changed. I can see why you posted the comedian and made the statement and you are somehow trying to compare what I said previously... sorry fella it is a weak link. You don’t have to do something yourself to be proud. Staines was spot on with his post.
Cheers and no you aren't being argumentative at all I totally get where you are coming from and appreciate the question and maybe I didn't put my point across the best way I could have, but didn't appreciate my post being totally distorted as 'mocking those who had died' as that was in no way could have been interpreted in the video and I felt it was being used to rubbish and undermine the points Stanhope makes.
I suppose it semantics a little for me, how words are perceived to an individual and how the meaning of words can alter ever so slightly. even how words can change somewhat in conjunction with order words.
The Doug Stanhope stand up is really questioning where types of pride especially Nationalistic can be very disruptive and cause/be used to mask disdain and hatred of other Nations, but could well have been race, religion etc.. I post on several politics threads on different sites and I often see the Germany's atrocities during their history being used as a reason to distrust them, dislike them and make assumptions which for me is a total crock of ****, who hasn't seen a nazi equivalent meme? That being the case do we really wanna bring up history? Yep there have been some great accomplishments in the UK but there is a lot that's far from pretty from being at the forefront of the slave trade to the partitioning of India and the Mau Mau uprising for a starters.
My response was to a post from SB, and he pointed out it was matter of circumstance rather than anything that we are British, that resonates with me and I feel a bit odd feeling pride to be British when if they had moved elsewhere I would be proud to be Swiss or Swedish, it just feels rather random to me, however each to their own as long as it's not harming anyone.
Oh BOLLOCKS..., I could have read the rest of the thread rather than just going straight to the reply to my comment as I think a lot of what I'm trying to put over has been covered in these other posts
I think you're forgetting, Will, that history started in c.1933 and finished in 1945.
History does seem to be very selective at times. I'll fully admit (hides behind the sofa) I'm not really a Nationalist in barely any way, yep I do want England to win at football slightly hypocritical maybe? But if I want to watch international football....
Yeah I know this sounds a bit hippie but a **** is a **** wherever they are from to me. I don't see why I should care more about what happens to some bloke in Scunthorpe who I've never met and will never meet than some bloke in Baku who I've never met or will never meet.

For example the Mau Mau weren’t the glorious freedom fighters that some make them out to be and were responsible for the murder, mutilation and torture of many innocent civilians in the most horrible and brutal way (of course Kenyan and British forces were equally brutal)
In historical conflict, I find there aren’t many true heroes.
Of course, while we should show some pride and to some extent be ashamed of our nations past, that should also apply to others......
