48 hours of violence, wanton destruction, looting and attacks on the emergency services in Hamburg by the Far Left, who will no doubt claim it's all justified in the name of humanity
It's not just Trump's presence though, is it? Though that made it worse. Far left, far right, jihadist, they all seek to justify violence in the name of their cause
I agree entirely Goldie, and the violence makes me sick to the stomach. It's absolutely no excuse, but some of the leaders at the G20 are no slouches at the same thing.
The Trunp has gone thing was supposed to be a little bit of humour however if you look back a G20, G7 and G5 meetings over the last 25 years or so violence has followed all of them no matter who is President, Prime Minister or King.
Violence is never a long term solution to anything. History shows us that. Even when it delivers short term results it creates a longer term problem for the future.
Too many people have the capacity for stupidity, anger at what they perceive to be the wrongs of the world and frustration that no-one seems to be listening. They themselves often forget to listen to people that don't agree with their views, empathise a bit and take other people into account.
Question for Leavers: do you believe anything Donald Trump says about trade deals is worth the oxygen he consumed saying it?
The G20 summit should never have been held in the middle of a big city Goldie - least of all Hamburg. I cannot justify any of the violence but.......we were left with 2 islands of wealth and power, which were cordoned off ie. the conference centre (36 sq. km. in all) around Dammtor - and the area around the Elbphilharmonie - so that this selection of crooks could enjoy a good concert in the evening. The rest of the city had to survive in the best way it could. The people of the city were never asked whether they wanted to play host to this band of crooks - Olaf Scholz (mayor and minister president of Hamburg) wanted to show off the city on the World stage, and was under pressure from Merkel to do it - but he will take the can, not her. The actions of the police in firstly allowing a demonstration - and then not allowing it to progress more than 100 metres before going in with their watercannons, pepper spray and battons, this being in one of the most enclosed parts of Hamburg ie. the Fishmarket area, did not help the situation. Nor did the numerous, self made, you tube videos of police violence - which quickly circulated. The main conclusion of all this is that the G20 should never be held in the middle of a big city again - at least not without the people there having a referendum on the subject.
I understand you being cynical, Cologne, but I don't think all the leaders deserve to be called crooks. I don't think either May or Merkel are, for instance. Probably not Macron or Trudeau. Don't question me too closely on Trump or Putin!
The G20 is a good time for jaw jaw eg Trump/Putin, so worthwhile imo, but your comment about venues outside cities is a serious suggestion given that riots by anarchists now go with the territory. Perhaps Richard Branson might hire out Necker Island...
I wouldn't put my house on it, Stan, but I do genuinely think Trump is an Anglophile and would put us high on the list for a bilateral agreement, far higher than Obama would have done
Putin, Xi, the Saudis, the Indonesians, Erdogan....most unsavoury characters. The G20 is solely based on wealth, I'd like a version which excludes dictatorships. Having them at the table validates them.
Ina totally different point the Sunday Times, a Murdoch newspaper, consists today largely of promotional fluff for Game of Thrones - not as advertising, but as editorial. Game of Thrones is broadcast by Sky Atlantic, a Murdoch channel. Coincidence I'm sure.
I think he says what he thinks will please the person in front of him because he loves being flattered and liked, and feels no need to follow up on what he says. He told the EU that the trade agreement with them was the top priority a couple of months ago. Anyway, nothing concrete can happen until the Brexit deal is sorted, and if that involves a significant transition period it could be many years off.
Meanwhile the EU and Japan have the outline of a trade deal, which will pose interesting questions for Japanese companies, especially car makers, with investment decisions to make.
Your right about some unsavoury characters, but I still believe that isolating dictatorial leaders of powerful nations, like Putin, is counterproductive. Better to have him in the tent pissing in, than outside etc... A chance to find common ground. I'd like to see greater communication lines opened with Kim Jong-un, probably through China.
The stuff on Game of Thrones is in the ST supplement. There's huge interest in the series, and the seventh is eagerly awaited (including by me). I think it's cleverly made, taking the Machiavellian machinations and struggles for power from our own medieval history and applying it to a series that has a touch of Tolkein. But yes, Murdoch is probably pushing it too.
To be absolutely honest Goldie, I could not give a monkeys left tit whether Trump likes Britain or not. America only needs to fart and you have scores of British experts sniffing it to try to work out if it is good news for Britain or not - is this what the Brexiters meant by sovereignty

I think British people do care, the US is the UKs largest export destination and a strong deal after Brexit is important.
I think that many of the demonstrators would have applied the epithet to Merkel Goldie. Personally, I find it sickening that she should be able to pose as some kind of 'champion' of climate protection when Germany is still, more or less, governed by the car industry. When Germany has this holier than thou attitude to nuclear power but still has Europe's largest open cast lignite mining. A country which exports 30% more than it imports but still tries to claim the moral high ground on environmental protection. Germany is one of the few countries in the EU. with rising Co2 emissions - for her to be hosting an event such as this and claiming some kind of 'moral' high ground over anyone is sickening.
