She was sacked/ had to resign by one PM for releasing confidential emails

She has made some really cruel statements...

Ms Braverman stoked controversy with her claims rough sleeping is a "lifestyle choice" and outlined plans to restrict homeless people from using tents.

I am not the only one who thinks she is a bad egg.. Robert Buckland used his defeated candidate speech last night to lay into her.

Thank you for confirming that her bad egg label is due to her views.

Buckland merely highlights the Tory split, between the One Nation Wets and Right wing. He disagrees with Bravaman but that doesn't make her a bad egg. In illegal immigration, she was addressing an intractable problem. Rayner's solution is apparently to build cheap houses across the Green Belt so everyone that arrives in a dinghy gets a home. Let's see how that goes down

What's wrong with criticising somebody's views? Would you agree that there can be certain views that are reprehensible and worthy of opprobrium - racism for example?

Jeez, Stroller. You’ve completely missed the point. This isn’t about opinions and views that others might find objectionable, it’s about whether that makes them a bad egg or not. Please keep up.

Accusing someone who lives on the streets of making a lifestyle choice...is not a view or an opinion. It is a statement of stupid ignorance .

There's no doubt that for some, it is a lifestyle choice. There are plenty of instances where someone homeless in a community of homeless people (possibly united by bad alcohol or drug habits) prefers to remain in that company on the streets, than be taken to a sterile hostel where they don't know anyone and will be pressed to give up their destructive habits.

Bravaman was right, but she overstated her case. She should have said "some" rather than implying "all". That doesn't make her a bad egg :emoticon-0100-smile

I'd say that it's not a question of whether or not racism might be considered objectionable, I'd say it is objectionable. Racists are 'bad eggs'.

Do you object to racists or do you defend their right to be racist?

I defend anybody’s right to be a ****, Strolls.

I think we now have a rival to Godwin’s Law whereby sooner or later someone mentions the R-word kills any open debate. Shall we call it Stroller’s Law?

Are you making an assumption of racism against Bravaman? Where's the evidence?

Lifestyle choice.

To have an addiction
To have a mental illness.
To become an alcoholic
To lose your job and be unable to pay your bills
To move out of an abusive household.

All of them can be called lifestyle choices...
But none I have had to make...and I assume you have not either ( yes I am making assumptions about you that I cannot support)

I didn't mention Braverman. I was just trying to establish whether Uber found racism objectionable or not. Seems he doesn't, or he at least thinks that everybody should have the right to express racist views.

It's a fine line with Braverman. If she isn't racist herself, she certainly deliberately fuels racism, which is probably worse.

In a free society I believe anybody has the right to say whatever they want however controversial or objectionable. Likewise, in that same free society anybody else has the right to react accordingly.

I haven't encountered anything like that either, Beth. You're right, there are some who find themselves on the street through domestic circumstances, and will jump at the chance of a place to live in a hostel. But there are also some, sure, with addictions but who have free will, who choose to stay on the streets with compatriots with the same mindset/problems. Both situations are true.

She needs to watch her language, I agree

It's not accidental.

No, probably not. She's trying to draw attention to what are undoubtedly issues of national importance and she does so by saying something slightly outrageous. That gets the headlines she's after for her cause. It's effective, but it does play into the hands of the rabid racists

…and those who see rabid racists everywhere.
