Do you remember when Gray was appointed to produce her report? There was widespread concern that she would come under such pressure from the government that it would turn out to be a whitewash, so senior Tories were falling over themselves to tell us how independent and unimpeachable she was. Gray actually held a reputation in Whitehall for actively limiting potential damage to the Government during internal inquiries and her report, whilst fairly damning of the culture at number 10, wasn't particularly so of Johnson himself. She declined to investigate the 'ABBA party' in Johnson's flat, saying that it would not have been “appropriate or proportionate” to do so. Not the actions of an anti-Tory plotter.

She may be entirely above board. She seems to have a trustworthy reputation. Nevertheless, if Starmer started offering her a senior role before or during the time that she was investigating Partygate, it would at the least be an incredible misjudgement on both their parts. She could not surely be the only suitable candidate for the Labour job.

Thank goodness we have an honest and open Shadow Leader. Not nervous or shifty at all in this interview, and answering all questions fully....:emoticon-0102-bigsm

Does it actually matter? The ‘crime’ that was Partygate is proven beyond any doubt aside from the endless corruption, lies and incompetence of the government throughout Covid and before/since. As ever, you seem to hold Labour to an infinitely higher standard than your own party.

Yes, it does matter. If there is to be a report, it has to be impartial. Otherwise, don't bother with a report.

The facts are the same. Ask the Met Police. Or the Privileges Committee.

What's different is that Starmer may have been offering Gray a top job when she was just about to prepare, or was in the process of preparing, a highly critical report on Starmer's political opponent.

Starmer is looking sleazy and evasive over this at present

It wasn't a highly critical report, though. She let Johnson off too lightly.

Doesn't change the facts that Johnson partied while all other were not allowed to. Desperation from the Tories, nothing more, nothing less.

Well, and Johnson's given he claimed the report vindicated him...

Do you honestly think a new report would be kinder given a Sunak Govt has a strong interest in making this report as bad as possible for Johnson?

Boris Johnson would have claimed any report vindicated him. He'd have put his usual spin on it.

I'm not arguing from his perspective, but rather that any report on government prepared by someone who is simultaneously in negotiation for a top role with the opposition should be set aside on the assumption that it may not be impartial.

Of course, we don't know the facts of the negotiation because Starmer won't answer a straight question

I have no qualms with what you're saying. Just not sure the consequences will please anyone except Labour.
