I would also add that if you listen to many top rap artists they freely use the 'N' word and use Gay/*** and other derogatory terms about women including violence, but that okay?
This months Orange.

Anything involving violence is not ok. And if lyrics promote violence, particularly against a specified minority, I'm sure that would potentially be a hate crime. I agree with you,, Ellers, some of this rap stuff is far worse that the Fairy Tale in NY song.

Agree mate. A fab Christmas song from many years ago is somehow offensive but Its okay for a rap artist to refer to woman as bit**'s and to 'slap them about' is acceptable because the artist's are somehow expressing themselves?
As I said it will all get kicked into touch in the coming years.

A hate crime has to involve a criminal offence, hate and typically violence. There was no hate in Fairy Tale of New York. No crime is committed by playing it, so we're not talking hate there.

Then there are words that are no longer socially acceptable. The n word is one. ***got and other of the gay abuse words are others, if used now. But in artistic work - like a song - in the past? I accept it's a fine line. Personally, I wouldn't change it but others may take another view. It's not, and should not be, a crime. Nor should using bum bandits etc as gay terms be a crime, unless used with hate behind it.

Of course, it is up to publishers, internet platforms, football clubs etc to ban someone who uses those terms, even if not used with hate. And then there are out of date philosophies like "a woman's place is in the home", "men are men and women are women" etc. Dinosaur views you may say, but it gets dangerous when steps are taken on a contractual basis to bar people from expressing those views. Like no platforming. Or sacking people because of non-pc views. That is what Rowen Atkinson was getting at. He was not referring to hate crimes.

Good post!! I think ,my issue is there is a fuzzy area that some people sit in where they will push an agenda that can push a narrative and influence others, an example is on not606 but happens on other platforms and media as well is there's this guy who would post endless 'reports' of crime stories committed by non whites, or non UK traditional names (was on the prem board), yet failing to report any such incidents that were committed outside of this profile. This pushes a false narrative and can influence, whilst this fella doesn't have the reach to influence others, similar things happen all over social media and do have a reach, and it does incite people, especially if they have a predisposition to err towards that way of thinking, if they see a very selected 'news' feed of story after story, it's basically propaganda.

The same is pushed with a lot of anti LGBT stuff, if all you see is story after story of claims that they wish to change or attack 'your way of life' or 'British traditions' which is not the case, it's mostly about a bit of consideration and a couple of small changes that really shouldn't bother anyone with half a brain and an inch of empathy, the Pogues song is prime example, the change has been made by a lot of broadcasters for donkeys years, with barely a word said, yet over Christmas there has been stories put all over the place and suddenly there is outrage!!!

Hey ho this one has been done to death now though

Hang on, the song is not offensive it's not been banned and nobody has called for it to be banned, language evolves and that one word has been edited out by most broadcasters for donkeys years, it's not a new thing and certainly not exclusive to this song, it's been going on for 50 plus years. I think you'll find that public broadcasters will censor words such as bitch as well as numerous other words, Can you give examples of songs that get radio play of songs that promote smacking bitches? Not heard the Prodigy track, nor others on the radio for years. The only song I can think of remotely along those lines that got radio play in recent years is blurred lines by Robin Thicke, which if you know about what that song is about should have never got any radio play.

You can’t even say you’re proud to be Ingerlish these days without some woke Remainer millennial snowflake reporting you to the police.

It will please a few that a Christmas song has had bits deleted for this months orange. I wonder if ***gots in gravel will be banned from the shops? Oh crap there goes another statue!
As you say it's been done to death.

Bloody Beaker folk. Coming over here, rowing up the Tagus Estuary from the Iberian Peninsula in improvised rafts. Coming here with their drinking vessels. What's wrong with just cupping up the water in your hands and licking it up like a cat?

It’s been done to death but I’m going to keep mentioning it and conflating it with other issues.

Ellers how is it this months orange? It's been censored on the majority of broadcasts for years, it's not new, like lots of other words that have been banned for broadcast. Still waiting on all those songs that are played on the radio that bang on about smacking bitches by the way.

Why do you wonder that? Has there been talk of it? Not heard any myself.

There's propaganda everywhere, including the MSM. You can't gag people, you just have to put the other side of the argument.

The subject of "right thinking" v free speech has indeed been done to death (!) but no doubt it will be revisited here, because it's a huge issue atm. It'll keep bubbling on and over on social media and beyond

I'm still P'd that Washington Redskins had to drop the name, yet its okay to be called 'Chiefs' 'Browns' and of course 'Dolphins'!

And white women are not allowed to style their hair in cornrows/braiding because it's "cultural appropriation", yet black women are entitled to adopt all "white" hairstyles. Let's have equality for all
