Agreed. I think it's a fair compromise on both sides. Even the UK fisherfolk will do well, they just have to remain patient.

Brexiteers on here have been saying for a while now that German manufacturing and the important exports to the UK would have an important say in the deal, and so it proved. Although Macron and Barnier were in favour of a no deal to soften the UK up for later resumed talks (it would not have had the effect they hoped for), it was German influence, Merkel through von der Leyen, that pushed the deal over the line. And so good sense prevailed. Boris has a much needed feather to stick in his cap, but for me, the real hero of the piece is David Frost, the UK negotiator who never showed anything but balls of steel

A lot of puke-inducing smugness on here over the EU trade deal. I'm pleased that there is a deal, but to rejoice over the thinnest of deals - nothing on services, 80% of the economy - just indicates how low expectations were. Yes, it's better than no deal, but that's about it as far as I can see. Unlike others on here, I don't pretend to understand yet the full implications of this deal (although the little swingometers in The Times were helpful). The devil will be in the detail.

As to the expressions of relief that it's 'over'. How is it over? It wasn't in 1975 and it's not now. Eurosceptics spent 40 years trying to get that referendum dishonoured and finally succeeded. I hope and expect that pro-Europeans will continue to campaign to take us back into a much closer relationship with the EU and that the next Labour government will do just that.

Much as I’d like it to not be the case, I doubt Labour have a chance until the election after next at the earliest. The demographic split of the country just isn’t there yet plus the constituencies are being gerrymandered further against them. Then there’s the possibility between 2024 and the election after of losing Scotland entirely in which case it’s basically whatever the next reincarnation of the Tories/Brexit Party Sunak wants it to be with no serious opposition at all. Rejoice.

As for the forelock-tugging and confirmation bias here, I think we’ve all been on this forum long enough to know how it would play out.

There is a review clause in the deal in four years or so. Could be wrong by a year. The fun never stops. Got to keep Farage in business somehow!

Watford you need to do a bit of reading up on your flag waving mates in the EU. They are not as nice as you seem to think. Especially that little Napoleon that Markel had to slap down. It’s about time you started something positive about the country you live in mate. Just try it, it won’t hurt you.... it’s not all bad here.

It’s not all bad at all. Even this **** brings opportunities albeit millions will be undeservedly worse off. Sadly I can’t back something that gives this government even more power and if we’ve learned anything from the last five years it’s that pandering to tub-thumping ‘patriots’ (jingoists who don’t like being called nationalists) is just silly when it’s something this important as by definition they tend to be painfully simple people. It’s not football where you’d always take a scrappy win. People should be demanding better of our government, especially those who vote for it. If you’re satisfied with the job they’re doing then good luck to you.

As opposed to witnessing the usual suspects from the other side on here creaming their pants over our government achieving trading terms with the EU inevitably worse than those we enjoyed previously?

As I said earlier, I'm pleased that there is some kind of deal, because no deal would been an utter disaster, but I don't pretend to understand yet all the ramifications of what has been agreed. You obviously do though, could you explain them?

Have a read up on how the EU treated (sorry bullied) Switzerland. I couldn’t believe what some journalist said. It was like listening to something the mafia do? Good riddance to that organisation and I know that we will do just fine.

Oh well if some journalist said it and someone as impartial as you is more optimistic than every credible economist in the world then that changes everything. Rule Britannia.

She was independent and from the EU. Sometimes you need to look at the big picture instead of disliking everything about this country mate? I have heard some fab arguments from the remain side and can agree with a few things. I don’t just dismiss them... well some are a bit stupid.
As for flag wavers during the last Brexit 4 years I have seen more EU flag wavers than anyone else.
