How richly ironic that the rabidly anti-Tory luvvies are being bailed out to the tune of £1.57 billion by those awful Tories. No doubt it won't take them very long to be telling us all it's nowhere near enough...

It's not just the luvvies though, is it.

Music venues and independant cinemas too. It's going to be a long time before music venues can re-open their doors for live events through no fault of their own. Music artists who have been stripped of the major part of their income are desperate to get back on the road, but venues operating at reduced capacity isn't really financially viable with the current social distancing requirements.

Spot on we have some excellent small venues close to me that are close to going under, they support up and coming bands, comedians, etc..

I agree, I've done enough early morning pickups to film sets or studios to realise there's a massive number of people with all sorts of niches that are reliant on this for their livelihoods. My gripe is with the sanctimonious 'stars' who seem to have nothing better to do than show hatred for those who don't match their political ideals. I don't think much of the Tories period but they've done as much financially in this situation as is possible for as many as possible. I guess if Hugh Grant comes out and says 'well done' I'll be proved wrong but it's highly unlikely...

Anyone disagree with her? Still trying to find somewhere to cash in my missus' bonus for all the clapping the NHS up here received...

Unfortunately - and assuming that she does work for the NHS and has a direct personal interest - she damaged her credibility with me by making it a "Britain is **** and racist" rant at the end of the clip. Why do that?
How about all those other key workers? I never stood outside and clapped on a Thursday night because getting through the crisis wasn't just about the NHS and I felt other key workers were being ignored by the public until very near the demise of the Thursday clapping. My son struggles to pay his basic living costs on the £9 an hour he gets paid working for a major grocer. He's deemed a key worker yet he's been sworn out by members of the public simply because the shelves weren't full. How about refuse collectors, most if whom earn little more than the NMW?
Staff in the NHS don't deserve to be paid more just because they work in the NHS. Everyone deserves to be paid fairly. There are 000s of staff who work in the NHS who never go near a patient - they are administrators, maintenance staff etc who perform the same role as they would anywhere in the private sector
The NHS needs to pay what it needs to pay to keep staff - some staff clearly aren't paid enough which is why they leave. But it isn't just about pay. It is also about how they are managed and how we as members of the public treat them too - how many frontline staff haven't been sworn at or physically abused by some of those very people who were standing outside and clapping on a Thursday?

Couldn’t agree more about your boy. Admittedly I piss away cash on plenty of stuff I don’t need like we all do (QPR mainly) and when I was on that (nearly a decade ago too) I was living at home but to have any sort of life on £400 a week gross must be a proper grind even before thinking about things like maintaining a basic car.

He would love £400 a week

Sadly he has only been able to get 28 hours a week, so I have to subsidise him

To be fair his employer did give their staff a modest bonus last month to reflect that added stress of March / April / May, but ironically many existing store staff didn't get the extra hours they'd hoped for as so many temps were brought in

I very much value an effectively funded and well run NHS - Moorfields saved the sight in my left eye earlier this year with an emergency operation that the private health system could never have achieved in time

The vast majority of us will have reason to be very grateful for the world class care that we receive at some point in our lives, but let's not forget all of those other very often poorly paid key workers without whom many of us would not have the comfortable lives that most of us on here do

****in hell Storford .....that clapping got me through the worst of times...I didn’t want a pay rise....I didn’t want proper PPE....I didn’t even want my patients to stop calling me a **** ‘cos I wouldn’t give them Entonox for their imaginary pain........clapping was worth far more than that.
Along with the free cake, it made me feel appreciated ;)

(Just to point out, if not obvious, this post does contain a hint of sarcasm)

Agree with you regarding the shop workers and other front line staff - my son earns a pittance from his job as he is under 18, so thankfully for him he's still at home.

As for the NHS, my wife has a degree in nursing, has been qualified for over 20 years, is still in the front line dealing with patients every day, and is paid poorly for her role as the senior charge nurse leading her team considering the pressure she is under, working with reduced budgets and decreasing manpower. In the past she's been assaulted, spat on, verbally abused on more occasions than I can remember, had her locker broken into in the hospital and her purse stolen, has come home crying due to some of the patients illnesses or deaths that she has seen - and still manages to treat all of her patients with dignity and respect. Is she and her co-workers just supposed to stay quiet and take it on the chin working through this current crisis? I'm happy for your son that he got even a small bonus for carrying on working during this time - it would be nice for all front line workers to get this wouldn't it? But no, the nurses, doctors, orderlies, paramedics etc just get a nice wee clap

Did you see this today pal....

Two ambulance paramedics stabbed in Wolverhampton

https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-england-birmingham-53310318

Looks like they were doing a mental health check on the fella as the police were with them on the call-out when the guy went nuts and stabbed them. Paramedics should be happy though, as they got a clap last night...

I did see that mate and it’s worrying for sure.
Been in that exact same situation many, many times before and always not really given it a thought.....We can’t be wearing our stab vests to every job but dunno if this might change a few things

And, very sadly, her experience will not be unique

I guess my broader point is that I had hoped that this crisis would lead to a wider show of respect for all key workers, many of whom have stressful and demanding jobs that they deliver day in day out for low pay - frequently little more than the NMW - yet too many people have already forgotten the legions of workers that very often do the jobs that they would never contemplate doing

This isn't political, this is about people respecting others and their contribution to society. You don't have to be of a particular political persuasion to do that

On the plus side....at least we get to skip the queue at Tesco’s :)

If the nurses want to make a case for a bonus, and I think they should, for ****'s sake don't use that deranged, wannabe-sociopath as a spokesperson

We had a similar case just round the corner from me a couple of years ago, except it was two police that got stabbed...
