Boris can't do what he wants. He doesn't have a majority. In this situation, it is convention for a GE to be held. But in this case, Corbyn etc are holding back so that Boris can't leave without a deal on October 31. I've said in a previous post, I don't see this as unreasonable. Boris has boxed himself in, and the Opposition can use their position as leverage to get an extension. BUT after October 31, there has to be an election. That is convention. If Parliament tries to play games, it will be damaging for it and the Opposition parties. I think Labour, SNP etc know that. So...the electorate decides As far as the Speaker is concerned, he should always be impartial. It has been this way through time, taken on trust. Bercow has disgraced his position by failing to be impartial and trying to use his considerable powers to stop Brexit. It will probably mean new rules to govern the Speaker. It just takes one rogue and the trust is broken...
Yes, I certainly agree that there needs be an election in November. I'm sure the new Speaker will be impartial (as is the current one). Johnson's tone seemed to have changed when he spoke in Ireland yesterday, perhaps having realised that he now needs to actually try to get a deal to avoid asking for an extension. A lot of talk in the media about a NI only backstop, which was apparently favoured by the EU originally, but May didn't want NI to be treated differently than the rest of the UK, presumably under pressure from the DUP. This seems like a reasonable way forward to me.
This would be a dangerous strategy for Boris, throwing the DUP under the bus and paving the way for a United Ireland. The Brexit Party would be the main beneficiary imo.

So there was no point both sides going round and round in circles - Remainers to the effect that it wasn't ever discussed or raised and Brexiters to the effect that we all knew it was going or likely to happen so why all the wailing now. I hope there isn’t. There will be, of course. The longer this all goes on, the more the simple maths of older people dying and younger people turning 18 works against the Tories who quite mentally are still viewed as some sort of economic wizards by the over-45s (please note this is not me celebrating death before Turkish starts crying). If a coalition of some sort or Labour alone finally deliver Brexit in some form they’ll take a big chunk of the rap for this whole debacle in decades to come and it’ll be forgotten as the neverending mess to try and save the Tories from the rushed promise to hold the referendum on a simple flimsy question in the first place to May’s dismal last election to try and save herself.
So May's deal, amended to restrict the backstop to Northern Ireland is definitely the way to go then. Piss off the DUP and the ERG, set the Brexit Party against Johnson and pave the way for a united Ireland. Win, win ,win. The odd thing is, it might actually get through parliament.
The Tories will probably whip themselves to reject it whilst simultaneously claiming they’re 99% of the way to a great deal whilst simultaneously claiming it’s totally necessary to remove the backstop whilst simultaneously claiming we have a great technological solution but refuse to share it just in case it’s actually complete nonsense.
No, in his place, I wouldn't go down as the PM that split up the UK. I'd accept there has to be an extension, do a deal with the Brexit Party, try and win the subsequent GE with a working majority and then resume my talks with the EU (putting forward concrete proposals for Ireland and NI) with no deal still on the table
Tory polling says they wouldn't get a majority in a GE. He's going to have to say what kind of deal he wants.
Does that take into account a non-aggression pact with The Brexit Party? Nigel Farage could be the next DUP
I'm not sure what the basis for the polling was. The thing is, to get Farage on side, he'd have to campaign for No Deal and there's not enough votes in that.
Interestingly, Sajid Javid was asked five times by Andrew Marr to deny there would be a deal with Farage, and he refused. Farage says one thing, but could compromise. I see it as more likely than Swinson doing a deal with Corbyn tbh
