I’m going to add my two’penneth worth to the debate on knife crime (nationwide, not just London).
We live today in a time of mass stabbings, several a day all over the country, many Resulting in death.
You have the liberals (snowflakes) amongst us who blame everybody but the perpetrators ie Khan, Central Government, police cuts and Theresa May.
Then you have the folk who bury their heads in the sand saying it doesn’t happen here where I live so it’s not my problem,
Finally you have the perpetrators the scumbags who commit these heinous crimes who do so to mainly protect their area of drug distribution or their postcode or whatever or in all honestly don’t give a flying **** about being caught or sent to prison because prison is no longer a deterrent, a life sentence these days is a sound bite it sounds good to the masses “LIFE IMPRISONMENT” in effect it means as little as 8 years behind bars in some cases, (when your 16 this means you are back on the streets before your 25th birthday).While you serve your sentence these days you have a T.V. In your cell, you have computers, PlayStations, X-boxes, radios etc, probably the same things you got into crime in the first place to be able to have, this is not a deterrent.
I am no angel I spent four and a half years in Dartmoor for robbing a man outside a bank using a firearm, I’m not proud of the fact I did, but I don’t hide it, now when I served my sentence I had to sew mailbags for 7 hours a day, for the princely sum of £3-50 a week, just enough to buy some tobacco and toiletries, I had one shower a week and for vast periods of my sentence I was locked in a 5’wide by10’ long cell for upto 23 hours a day, using a potty to **** in and a bucket to piss in, can you imagine the smell, they all have toilet facilities in their cells these days.
I was allowed one visit every 28 days for 2 hours that was if anybody could be arsed to shlep all the way down to Cornwall for a two hour visit.
I was miserable, depressed and I was ashamed of what I had done to my parents and their social standing, but more importantly I hated every minute of it and I was determined never to go back, I haven’t,I’ve been out since the 6th April 1987, I made a conscious decision because prison was a horrible place, it was degrading, you were treated with contempt by the prison officers (mostly ex forces) it was bleak, depressing cold and lonely.
Prisons today are not a deterrent they are a holiday camp, with facilities Butlins would be proud of, they have Gym facilities you would pay a fortune to use on the outside, prisoners have rights, they are called by their names with Mr in front, they are not made to feel insignificant, they are pampered to the ****ing hilt, prison has become the soft option if your caught, there is no longer a deterrent not to go back, it’s a short holiday away from the streets till you can go back and carry on with whatever you did to wind up there.
THE PROBLEM TODAY IS NOT THE CRIME ITS THE PUNISHMENT, IT IS NOT A DETERRENT ITS A ****ING HOLIDAY.
Build more prisons, take away their rights to stuff and make them pay their penance to society, don’t make society PAY for their penance, make prison a place you don’t want to go back to and maybe just maybe you’ll have a deterrent and you might have hundreds more people like me who “went straight “and became a contributor to society instead of problem for it.

I got so confused that I had to look it up, though I knew it is not an appropriate term for a modern mainstream politician to use. ‘Coloured’ or more accurately ‘Colored’ is strongly associated with the segregation laws in the Southern US states that were put in place after the Civil War, the so called Jim Crow laws which were the focus of all the protests in the Fities and Sixties. In Britain and the Empire ‘coloured’ was used to describe anyone who wasn’t white, and in South Africa specifically for mixed race people.
If it upsets people best to avoid use, unless you want to upset them. Though a couple of minutes ago a BBC person was talking about a play where the actors are all quote ‘women of colour’ which confused me again.
I’m with Hitchens C on Islamophobia. It’s been hijacked as some kind of quasi racist thing, when Islam has nothing to do with race, it’s an ideology. Anti semites hate Jews because of their genetic heritage, which of course they can do nothing about, Islamophobes hate Muslims because of their beliefs, which seems to me to be a very different thing. Though I suspect that a lot of Islamophobes hate Muslims because a lot of them aren’t white.

It's ironic that in a week with all these stabbings it appears that a murderer who killed a child and is in jail for 25 years is able to taunt the victims family through Instagram? That says it all about prisons and deterrents. Agree with your points Turkish. You do time you get a cell and toilet, No TV/Mobiles/Internet and the other luxuries they have.
Excellent Turkish. I also received a 4 and a half year sentence when I was younger and served over a year in the Armley Castle before being moved to an open prison, which was better than a travel lodge. Own car, job weekly home visit etc, ensuite room. You only had to pay 50p a day for your TV but with an outside job could pull in 500 a week. People were actually turning their parole down to serve all their sentence there. It's as easy as you make it but unfortunately, as you will know, the stigma stays with you for the rest of your life. It made me the person I am today which in reflection is a better one than I was before. Sounds like you were there during the years of slopping out!! Its no life, a complete waste of time and rehabilitation is non existent. It comes from within oneself.

Thank you for sharing, Turkish. It’s good to see that prison as a deterrent works (at least for some) and to have first-hand corroboration of the impact softening the regime is having on the criminal fraternity.
As for the actual criminal act of choosing to stick a knife in another human being, I have no answers. I struggle with the mentality of others that see such a thing as a legitimate response to a perception of wrongdoing.
Where it’s rival gangs knifing each other, I’m afraid I have little sympathy. He who lives by the sword... etc. As for how these individuals end up in gangs, well that’s a vast and complex topic encompassing myriad factors including the decline of the traditional family and the absence of a proper male role model amongst many, many other things.
Where innocents fall victim to knife crime my heart goes out to them, their families and their friends. It’s meaningless killing perpetrated by meaningless individuals, I’m afraid. I believe, sadly, that society will benefit enormously by their total irreversible removal.
I see May is threatening Brexiters in her Grimsby speech saying "we may never leave the EU" if you don't vote for her deal. Her deal won't get through and it will be another failing of her leadership. She really has to go. She should realise that the people of this country want the job done and dusted. let's just walk on the 29th!

This is an example of what I previously referred to as political correctness taken too far. I listened to the radio this morning (Desert Island Discs) to hear a black artiste/actress (I didn't catch the name) whose work is highly regarded by many - not just luvvies in Islington. She referred to herself as a woman of colour and other notable women of colour for the strides they had made. Just remember that this is perfectly acceptable but mistakenly refer to someone as being coloured as Amber Rudd did and apologised immediately for (quite genuinely) and all hell breaks loose.
Apparently it is offensive because it is old fashioned hailing from a less liberal time when the world was divided into White and non-White. There is an assumption that this meant then and still means today s that only Whites mattered and were superior and that anyone who wasn't was therefore inferior. What cobblers. It stereotypes anyone who referred to coloured people as automatically racially prejudiced. You are not and neither am I. But we must both remember that if we refer to colour at all it must be that the person is of colour. That is perfectly acceptable. So I am led to believe!
How about 'paleface'? Come to think of it when we've achieved our two week glorious suntan each year can we please be referred to as 'persons of voluntary colour' instead of 'dago' or 'wop'.
