The Oscars

I attended the Oscars ceremony in 2012. My abiding memory of the evening is hearing Michael Douglas do a **** while berating someone on the phone.

True story.

3 Billboards is cracking but as I said I think Del Toro was long overdue.
It's the better film and should have won that accolade. Wouldn't have bothered if Del Toro was given best director if being over due was a criteria in the judging. Although it has to be said out of the two of them McDonagh has made the better films.

Better stories (in general) and cracking dialogue agreed, but for visual impact I think Del Toro has the edge there.

I would have happily seen 3 Billboards win best picture but I can see why the voters went for The Shape of Water, it's all down to taste.

While i agree Del Toro's style is more often than not a visual feast he suffers from a lack of substance. The shape of water is not a bad film, far from it and it looks great and that's why it probably got the nod. McDonagh's films have been consistently excellent though. Admittedly he hasn't made that many.

Gary Oldman got an Oscar then? I have no interest in seeing a film about a white person called Winston, but Gary Oldman deserves an Oscar if any **** does.

I love the Oscars! Every year there's some issue all the luvvies love to gather around. Down the years we've had the indigenous rights of native Americans, more rights for black people, the rainforest, climate change etc. Now it's greater protection for actresses - of course, none of whom got where they are by sleeping with film producers and directors etc.

All worthy causes but, strangely enough, they seem somewhat shallow when the message is delivered by batshit actors and actresses who would sell their soul for five minutes of fame.

Also, there's usually one token disability actor who gets held up as an inspiration to everyone. Their fame lasts the obligatory 15 minutes before disappearing into the ether, quickly forgotten by the shallow celebrities who were recently falling over themselves to get pictured with them in front of the nation's TV and press.
