I lump it with his dramatic flair in other on field gestures, as he tries to do anything possible to give his side an advantage (bar causing injury, as he's not that type of dirty). We interprete the bite as crazy since we are so "civilised", but "uncivilised" beings do more often actually act out of calculation than craziness.
