Aslong as you have a good answer to the interviewers questions then you will be fine. I said something along the lines of "well I was young, didn't want to commit myself to any particular area of business at the time, wanted to get a good all round knowledge and pick which area I wanted to go into on the back of that". Seemed to satisfy most of the interviewers, but to get to interview stage you need to look good on paper and that is where experience and the good degree come in.

You could get the experience after the degree through internships etc but it would be better/easier imo to do it during one of the holidays, or better yet if its possible to take a placement year on your course as you get paid more and could potentially set yourself up for a job straight out of uni.

Not initially. I left school with loads of Cs and Bs @ 16 so I beat everyone to the 'office junior' jobs. worked my way up etc however redundancys etc changed the picture.

By the time Labour were letting everybody go to Uni and study degrees in pedicures or flower arranging my experience (loads and in many different areas) nor proven track record of being able to start at the bottom and get promoted uber quick counted for nothing :)

Sooo I gave up and worked packing eggs for 5 years before deciding to get back into it.................still no luck cos now pet grooming degrees were out and sooo after a year or so on the dole I started my own business. Perfect for me because I am great at talking to people on the net (written) but very bad face to face (asperger's)

My boss (me) is still telling me I'm late every morning though....some things never change. lol

Yeahhh fair enough, thanks for answering. Hopefully I'll be able to get to that stage then..! Will probably take a while to get interview technique down.

I'll have a chat with uni about it when I'm back - the uni I go to has the highest graduate employment rate in the country because they pride themselves special systems for employability. I'm sure they'll be able to help me with something. What kind of experience did you get, business specific?

Ahh sounds like you hit the job market at the wrong time... Suppose that links in with what I was saying about everyone having degrees these days! There are a lot of silly ones about... not that I have the right to devalue any degrees but you see some degrees being offered and you have to wonder what the point of them is.

I wasn't aware you had asperger's (but I think you mentioned something before, maybe it didn't register) but it's useful that you've found a way to make it not affect your career.

Haha even if you're self employed, you can still complain about the boss :D

Is 1984 actually any good? It's one of those books I've always intended to read but just haven't.

I don't read, more because I don't know what to read and hence can't be bothered.

This has been fun. Almost like a "who are you and what do you do?" start to the thread. I like that stuff. Keep going!

In other news, I'm off to bed. Night all.

I haven't either. I need to get a bit more into reading, because there are quite a few books I know I'm missing out on. I feel particularly bad having seen the Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas film, but not read the book.

Lol. It didn't affect my career because I only found out 2 months ago. When my son was diagnosed they made me do this little test and I became 'The Rain Man' :)

Before that I just hated myself for wasting what I had all the time..........before taking any drug offered to me or getting leathered for 10 years just to fit in :) (the latter prior to having kids I should add)

I only know one person who has read Fear and Loathing. The whole time he was reading it he complained about how it didn't make sense and how crap it was, then I see him post on Twitter a couple of weeks later about how it's his favourite book ever. Talk about trying too hard.

I love Hunter Thompson, and I loved the film even though the critical response was pretty average, so I'm sure I'd love the book. He's got to be the most fascinating man who has ever lived.
