What the hell has Downing done to warrant a start over Bellamy or Maxi or even Sterling? He's playing because of his price tag and it's bloody annoying to see promising players put to the sidelines because Dalglish has to play a crappy average knob head on the left wing.

Maybe if we keep moaning about him, karma will make downing do something useful so we all look like a bunch of dicks. So yes istvan kozma was more use than downing!
completely agree. Downing is the reason we haven't got 4th yet. It's a bit cruel to pin it on one player, but he's the only one that never had a great game. In fact, he's regularly had terrible games where he should have been subbed off at the half. He can't cross, he can't run past players, and Enrique pretty much has to cover both LB and LM when they play on that side together. He's been a passenger so far, what does Sterling have to do to get into the cup side? We've ignored youth so much in the past 10 years it's insane, Benitez basically cut off ties with the Academy and I was hoping Kenny would undo that, especially with Robinson/Flanagan. Looks like it's next season for the promising youth.

Just for the discussion, Downing's stats havn't actually been any worse than last years in terms of successful crosses, dribbles per minute and forward passes. It's just that this year, there's been no one on the end of his crosses. Bare in mind he's not the set piece taker for us when he was for Villa and all in all, it's not as terrible as people make out. Don't think he's deserving of a starting spot given who else he's competing with, but one of these days he's going to turn the corner and step it up a notch and it'll coincide with our forwards connecting with his balls (in a footballing sense). Disappointed not to see a few younger players on the bench. Looks like we're going all out for a double cup run this year.
