Why close my thread? We need to discuss what to do about abuse and personal attacks. Saying Button isn't as good as blah. blah.. Or Schuey should retire, or Hamilton gets better treatment at Mcl, same as Vettel does. Thats oK. Its just opinion. Saying Bloggs talks ****e and should stick it where his mother never kissed him is not acceptable. So what do we do - start the count with a warning - 3 strikes and you are out for a month?
Maybe I'm missing something but I don't know what all the fuss is about. It was a hundred times worse after Monaco. Vettel fans should try and learn to live with what Hamilton and Alonso fans have had to tolerate for years now, not to mention Schumacher, Senna... I could go on. It's worth bearing in mind that few people attack a mediocre driver, they just get ignored.
I also agree with Bergy that a different approach to moderation would be beneficial. 'Three strikes and your out' sounds like a good idea to me.
Ok, I'm going to stick my neck out here. Last race weekend, one of the mods (I'm fairly sure it was AG, correct me if I'm wrong) appeared in the middle of what I thought was a reasonable discussion throwing insults like "sanctimonious twats". This was what provoked Genji's exit. What provoked AG's line was a discussion of the RBR team orders/Vettel issue but there was nothing personal in it to any user. But AG's comment wasn't personal to any particular user either. However, IMO, a moderator shouldn't use lines like that, leading by example etc. He did apologise but if the mods are going to use insulting language then it encourages others to think it's ok. I know this is just one example, that the moderation here is generally very good and that we all make mistakes but if we want to enjoy relaxed moderation, we should be prepared for the occasional flare-up and it's down to all of us to sort it out.
I understand what you're getting at Max and to a certain extent I agree. However, a point I would like to stress most strongly is that these 'flare ups' needn't occur in the first place! Surely a more mutually beneficial method to enjoy 'relaxed moderation' is by accepting it as the privilege that is, thus by being respectful and polite to each other. This would then result in a good, friendly atmosphere which would mean these 'flare ups' wouldn't happen.
Well I'm not PMC but I agree they shouldn't happen but realistically they will, I think, after a race which we were all hyped up for, had a few drinks maybe, didn't get the result we wanted, irked by some injustice etc. It happens. Plus, the internet isn't like in-person: no body language, no tone of voice, no smile or facial expression; there's an empathy disconnect, if that doesn't sound too pretentious, it's that much easier to misinterpret. I think not 606 is generally very good; if there's the occasional problem, it gets shut down pretty quickly. It's sad that Genji went; I hope he comes back and that Silver doesn't go the same way.
If you want abusive arguments, go to the general chat thread and insult a poster named Toby (i've done it). If you want sensible banter, technological discussions etc, you should come here. That's an ideal situation for not606.
Gah! What an 'epic fail' (as these young kids say these days). I extend sincere apologies to you dear sir! I agree that whilst is likely that these things happen, I still maintain that it doesn't need to and is easily avoidable. Both myself and Cosi were part of a forum where nearly every member showed courtesy and respect to each other. The threads were informative and enjoyable and whilst the majority had their favourite teams/drivers, no one ever expressed contempt or disrespect for a contributors view because of it. You raise some very good points about tone of voice and body language. However, I feel that in most cases, offending comments are very clearly intending to be blunt and rude. For example... 'Member 1 - Vettel is an average racer, it's all just the car. Member 2 - You're so pathetic, you can't even accept that Vettel is a good driver' Member 2 could have easily said 'that's an interesting point of view Member 1, perhaps you could explian why you think this?' instead of going immediately on the ultra defensive. People on here need to remember that learning and gaining a better knowledge of things is much more beneficial than simply replying with an ill thought out abusive reply. The point of a forum is not to argue, but rather to gain new knowledge through sharing with others!
Maybe it's time for another moderator though I remember Mick saying three was too many, think theres a need for it, puts me off posting when people take offence at anything and start chucking personal abuse your way.
we all get along before the race result so maybe we should be ready for a post race bust up and learn to deal with it and not sulk. Maybe a dedicated post race thread that if you enter it then you should know what to expect. (others will be merged) The 3 strikes rule sounds good too
What's the opposite of an epic fail? You're right, of course. I'm just trying to be objective, play devil's advocate. Does that make me a troll apologist? I hope not. Your line about not expressing "contempt or disrespect for a contributor's view" is an excellent one and, IMAO, should be written into the House Rules. Personally, I think I've learned more from those who don't share my views than from those who do, that's a generalisation but it's one big reason why I enjoy coming here and, you're right, that is something we should try to protect. Incidentally, which was this Utopian forum where everyone was respectful? I've only seriously contributed to this and the old BBC, this forum being by far the most tolerant.
Well there has been some heated words, i would usually say unlike not606, but after the last few Hamilton wins, Vettel bins ive come to expect a certain few to get in arguments. I appeal to people (not saying im an experienced head) but i am unbiased, to cool down, look at what has been said and walk away from it. When i joined in January, there was a great community, but when a website expands as always you lose the community feel a bit. What i dont want to see is the people who started here from the start to be alienated by these blow ins, who come to argue their point with tunnel vision, in other words no ones counter argument means anything to them. We will not budge, the people who cause heated debated will come and go, but the core of this f1 section must stay if we are to have a good debate on here.
I like your point of view. When I joined, I was welcomed - individually but en masse! When I joined the BBC, I was Michael Jackson making a Pepsi ad - in flames! This is a great forum. When the Murdoch thing blew up, I was so surprised by the passion about that and the consensus, more agreement than we have when we discuss F1! I was really touched by that: in the 'real World', I got more "oh, you're being idealistic, naive" - until it really blew up. But there's more agreement than we think about F1; as Bando said, we all agree before the race... It'll be fine tomorrow probably, just as it was after Monaco.
I agree that there is a good core of users here, I've been on the board from the start and there are still a few faces from January like El Bando, Fred, Manny, and others kicking around. I keep coming back as it is a nice board and it's convenient for me also with my team having a very lively football board, I think there should be room for another moderator to freshen things up though I'm not doing it again myself. This three strikes thing is a bit subjective, how do you measure it, we only use the board and aren't paid to police it or anything like that, maybe it's time to revise the house rules or have a sticky thread regarding board etiquette put up.
I was on here during the race and the thread was going well. Its amazing how short peoples fuses become when the race is over. Was a very good race in my opinion, lots of close racing with 3 different cars all in with a shot till the bitter end. The part that won Hamilton the race in my opinion (as I said earlier) was when Hamilton took Alonso round the outside. It set him up to control the later stages of the rage and allowed him to keep the car out of dirty air. Hamilton, Alonso and Webber where in a league of their own today, with Hamilton being the cream off the crop. Vettel had a shocker, but his 4th place even with a shocker shows how he can run away with it on good days. Peace people.
Right I've finally got through reading the majority of posts on ideas for this forum and there are a few interesting idea's out there. Maybe those with geninue idea's should post in the Pits 2.0 group so that the idea's can be found easier and so that the F1 page can be for direct F1 chat. The next GP is in less than a week so if people feel the need for change we need to get a move on. I was pretty lenient this morning and through the race on here but if people want more mod involvement then I would be happy to listen to idea's of what should be done.
Another mod is needed I reckon, can't hurt can it, i think a lot of issues are that maybe one guy thinks something is ok and lets it go but somebody else might not think so. Personal abuse should be a big no-no, there is no reason to call somebody else an idiot or whatever for expressing an opinion, I've started seeing it a lot on here.
