I was actually thoroughly impressed with Downing... In the first half, he seemed our only attacker, when no one else moved forward to support or score. Fitting that it was him who scored our goal... Surprised we got one though. And was it just me, or did Jose Enrique look good end to end for anyone else?
for me it was all about midfield. lucas will play the style right, henderson hadn't a clue and shouldn't have started IMO and as for gerrard.... well the old lets trott 20 yards forward to play the glory hound role like fat frank won't cut it stevie... rodgers biggest task is getting gerrard to play in a midfield 3 without thinking its all about him. Shelvey and lucas would have been 2 of the 3 i think if 1) picked and 2) fit. we'd have won by 4 if that was the case.... positives are we put 45mins on kelly and johnson which both needed... we got the away goal and we got out of there with only joe cole going down injured which put on sterling who looked like our main and only outlet. much to build on but considering its effectively a preseason game for us we are going to get through the tie and keep working.
I believe Gomel are mid-way through their season? And we held our own, good for fitness levels. Agree with MITO on Gerrard.
it is a point they ar eon mid season break.... they were a lot better than rabotniki who we played two years ago under hodgson.... 1-0 away and the bbc call it slender. I'd say that points to the salford media centre containing big bias 1-0 and an away goal = we are through.... the main message is keep up the preseason work and batter those senior egos into two touch football. the amount to ties i saw guys jogging up field wit hthe back to the ball or jus tplain carrying the ball until someone came to challenge was terrible really...
Haha let's not start this again! To be fair, it's like a 'pre-season' match and our fitness levels still need improving. Gerrard has been struggling for fitness for a while so it might take him a little while plus he hasn't played much since the Euro's. I still expected better from the team, just simple passing and moving to show that we're making small progress. The game against Toronto was a very good example.
Sorry mate couldn't resist you're right though in that he didn't have a great game (not many did) but I'm sure as always he will find a way to adapt. BR also has to find a way to get the best out of him I'm not sure I expected too much from last night it will take longer than a few weeks and months before we see certain players really click. The positives for me were the goal for Downing who will take some confidence and seeing just how much the introduction of Lucas changed the dynamic of our midfield
We always play **** in these games no matter how good our team is. Not going to use it to judge the style of play considering the circumstances. One positive I will take though, Adam didn't feature at all amongst a fairly weak squad.
