Really? I can't think of any outfield player who would think "yeah, a penalty shoot out, that's my chance to get a load of glory with no risk of being the fall guy!" They're hardly contests designed to boost the ego of the takers now, are they? ;)

Possibly not but there are certainly elements of machismo and egotism in there as proved by it being seen as some kind of weakness when he didn't take one.

Just watching match of the day, Norwich denied a nailed on penalty, discraceful club, absolutely no class.

I suppose so - there is a kind of "stand up and be counted" expectation when it comes to regular penalty takers in a shoot out. Maybe it's harder for some people to shirk from those responsibilities if they feel they might let the team down than it is to step up and risk ****ing up. Like Pearce said it was easier to take the penalty in Euro 96 that not, cos he didn't want people to think of him as a bottler. And of course he was still 100% confident he was going to score!

On the other hand, maybe Dalglish just didn't trust him to take an important penalty after the miss against Brighton?

I'd certainly expect a 'world-class' striker to step up and be named in the first 5 takers.

Maybe, but then like TT says, if he wasn't confident he'd score then maybe it's the bigger decision to step aside and risk being blamed if the side lose than to take a penalty and risk missing. After all, his confidence can't have been that high after missing the Brighton one, and he couldn't hit a barn door with a laser guided smart banjo today...

Anyways, off to bed for me. Well done to both clubs for a pair of largely undeserved wins :D (well, one win one draw against lower league opponents... <whistle>)

When's the DVD of today's historic Liverpool victory coming out? Will they be showing the missed penalty from various different angles? What a great moment for Liverpool!

    Fair enough, enjoy your win.

I make it Liverpool 41-38 Man Utd - racking up those League and UEFA cups tips the balance in your favour.

Until a team from outside Europe or South America wins the World Club Cup I can't include it in the count as a competitive trophy.
