Ronaldo and Messi would be average but capable of a good performance type players based on international football.

Yeah, same old same old. Goal line clearances, too many touches Yada yada yada. Simply don't understand this persistence with managers using Suarez in the middle of the front 3, he brilliant as he is tries to be too smart everytime. So need to shift him out wide.

Nobody said Rio isn't a good defender, but he was over-priced compared to other players of a equal/higher standard ie Marcel Desailly and Sami Hyypia.

 

Depends what you class as over priced.

My view differs greatly from yours I suspect. A player who has been a mainstay of our defence during a period in which we have won everything available to win and in most cases more than once.

Also considering he cost Leeds £18million I think £29million isnt too far off his real worth at the time. Compare it to the prices of others and in some cases it looks steep but then you see Lescott at £24million and realise it was a bargain

The players you mentioned were not good enough to help their teams anywhere near as much as Rio helped United.

 

Rio joined United for £29.1 million in 2001, it was a lot of money for an English defender. Was it value for money at the time? I'm not convinced. Play the ball in front of him and he'll defend all day, get around the back and he's in trouble. He's also always been prone to ball-watching. So in my opinion, it was over-priced. As for Lescott, your ex player when at City was like a child in a sweet-shop, and Dave O Leary. Neither should be left with an open cheque-book.

 

I would love it if it was Rio and Phil Jones in Uniteds back four. Imagine unleashing Raheem Sterling on those two? It would be so bad..it would be beautiful.

Aye, but that depends on your comparison. Compare him to Nesta - £24 million for a 26 year old in the same season, and he looks much better value. And the fact he was an English player bought from an English club who were one of our biggest rivals at the time always meant the price would be inflated, same with Lescott, Collymore, Heskey, Carroll, Berbatov, Jo, Torres and any other number of players. Tho' Rio has actually lived up to his price unlike the others mentioned
