If we have to have a 48 team tournament maybe it would have been better to not have a round of 32 but have 24 sides go through to the knock-our stages (top 2 in each group), with best 8 group winners going straight into the last 16, which might have made the final round of matches more important at the top of the groups rather than in the middle.
They tried to fix that from happening again by making the final group games kick off at the same time.
This new format would only work if every group played their games at the same time, then you’d have 90 mins of an interesting 3rd place finish table. Doing it staggered over 4/5 days doesn’t work.
FIFA need to change something at the next World Cup so it’s not like this again. Whether they will or not, I doubt
