Why is jeopardy a good thing though? If that is the ideal an unseeded straight knockout would be the best format. Surely it's not good that the best team gets eliminated early?
Finishing 3rd in a group of 4 but still going through seems unnecessary to me. 8 of the 3rd place teams go through don’t they? For me that’s too many.

8 games to win the tournament is too many. Playing over 100 group games just to go from 48 to 32 seems silly too.

I’m sure I’ll get into it once the last 16 comes.

I’ve no interest in seeing Curacao, Cape Verde, Jordan, Azerbaijan play. Just feels like qualifying.

Haven’t watched a minute of the World Cup yet, just hasn’t appealed to me at all.

I basically don't.
Eventually you get some decent "for the neutrals"
heavyweight games, but they tend to be
few in numbers.

I am pondering watching the England game
purely to see a Modric last hurrah +
the possibility of seeing Vuskovic against
what would be PL top third opposition.

Also seemed to elbow someone in the second half, which isn't getting the coverage

I get that they don't want to be the official to send him off. There must be enormous pressure on them to keep him on the field, even if they don't recognise it consciously. However, they do have a duty of care to the other players and if the challenge is dangerous then they have to intervene. Suspect Messi would have to do something far more obvious - like actually break someone's leg - for action to be taken.

There’s no doubting Ronaldo is one of the GOATs but it feels like Portugal are desperately trying to keep him relevant and focusing too hard on trying to get Ronaldo to score/ win the game than actually Portugal itself.

I think in their next game, Martinez needs to make the difficult call to start Ronaldo on the bench and have him come on at around 60. He’s done phenomenal to last as long as he has but I think elite football is now beyond him as a starting player.

Portugal is a lovely country and the people are great, but when it comes to football they really piss me off.... :emoticon-0183-swear
They are like the worst aspects of Leeds, Liverpool and City all rolled into one!
<laugh>
Much like Switzerland, they assumed they just needed to turn up and they'd get three points...and didn't

That being said, Portugal were uniquely obnoxious: the first three minutes had them playing keepaway and not deigning to pass the ball forward, after scoring any time DR Congo started to build momentum by getting a few passes strung together the cynical challenges flew in to snuff that out ASAP, and they were dicking around with the ball to rub their noses in their being 1-0 up for most of the first half

It would be terrible if they wound up crashing out in the opening round, really it would...

48 teams is way too many. Should be 32 in the group stage and then to last 16 (top 2)

This format removes jeopardy early on and a lot of the games feel pointless.
The second half of the france cameroon game was excellent...well worth looking it up on the net
