I respect that, and I'm honestly not trying to get you to change your mind, but just as an example, if you had never seen Matt Le Tissier play live but were presented with all the evidence that he is the greatest attacking midfielder Southampton have ever had, would you not vote for him?
Nope. I would only vote for players who I have seen in my era as a Saints fan. Fortunately I did see him live so it's all hypothetical.
But can you see how frustrating it is for those of us who have seen most or all of the players on the list, and have chosen who we believe to be the best, when younger fans are only picking from a much shorter list?
I understand that, but can't vote for someone based on a few Youtube videos. Plus you oldies had the privilege of seeing Saints lift the FA Cup for the one and only time. Us youngsters have to make do with the JPT. I'm sure you'll get over this slight annoyance.
This one more than any other of the votes shows why this has no credibility whatsoever. I love all Saints players, always will, but for players like Beattie, Lambert, Pahars to be getting votes over someone like Kevin Keegan is ridiculous. I know people will bleat in about never seeing them but I thought we were picking the bet ever all time Saints XI? It's almost embarrassing to have someone like Rickie over some of the names in that list. I loved Rickie at Saints, he was awesome and the best fairytale story ever, but it's killed this for me now. I don't know how it could have been worked, but hey there you go. Can we do an all time England XI next? That'll be ****ing hilarious.
Cognac or red wine working? Of course this is bloody stupid. It's as absurd as United fans voting Eric Cantona as their greatest ever player. When the best player ever in the world played for your club - not to mention the genius that was Bobby Charlton - and you go for Cantona then words fail me.
Why don't you run the polls again, but for the over 40s only? Then you'd have Godders whinging that no one voted for Stanly Whinston Smyth, the best centre half the 1800s had to offer.
I'm really not sure who to vote for, I will def vote for Channon, how can you not and I'm 36. My second choice is giving me arseache! I was going to vote for Ron Davies but then I'm picking 2 players that I've never seen play live. So I started thinking about the 3 I've seen, Beattie, Pahars and Lambert. Lambert is the obvious choice but didn't play an awful lot in the top division so out of the 3, Pahars is the man, a quality player and a top bloke. But can I really pick him in front of Davies or even Keegan?
Davies and Channon for me, I understand why those who didn't see big Ron wont vote for him, but he was the best striker in Britain for several years and all those years he played for Saints.
We are voting for an all time best XI so regardless of wether I've seen them or not, I've seen enough, read enough etc to vote for Channon and Davies. An honourable mention to Keegan who I used to pretend I was in the playground(along with Shilton), and Pahars who was a quality player and when fit would easily beat my fave player from the last 10 years - Lambert - into the team.
I respect your view, but I've voted for Channon and Paine based mainly on the fact they hold two major individual club records which I think should count for something. Despite the individual accolades of Keegan and Big Ron, I have gone down the seen play route and opted for Marians It's probably not correct, but it is tough to justify voting for a player you've never seen, especially when you have more than one option.
Wonderful players and wonderful memories. I have been lucky enough to have seen them all. However if you take skill, commitment and length of service into account for me it can only be Big Ron and Mick Cannon.
