Thing is, we were a bit rubbish, but the expectations were at that level too which made things like the 4-1 against Liverpool SO much more satisfying. Actually, scrap that, a 4-1 win against Liverpool right now would be utterly, utterly beautiful. But just not as surprising.
Just read through this thread, and didn't it get lively? Quite clearly Mark Wright should have topped the poll by a country mile, but obviously there's not enough old gits about. After him it gets difficult. But not that difficult-has to be Killer.
My votes went to Mark and Michael. Svensson was the difficult choice. Wright was out there with no competition. If I hadn't chosen him it would have been between Watson [another former England captain], who was so solid, and Jose.
Claus and Jose for me. Both great on the ball as well as being good defenders. One player not on the list (I suppose because he didn't stay for long) is Andrew Davis. Despite the fact that he only played half a season or something like that, he was actually voted our player of the season in 2008 (admittedly he didn't have much competition!).
