When we used to visit my grandparents in Bede St., just after the war, there was never a dull moment. Grandad didn't think Carter was in Buchan's league, whilst Dad thought the sun shone out of Carter. They used to argue like cat and dog. I used to sit there and think neither of them could possibly be better than Shackleton!!!! Bloody pantomime, it was. My father saw both Carter and Shackleton in their prime. He admitted that Carter wasn't the magician Shackleton was, but always said Carter was the more complete player. I can believe that, on both counts. What a pity we don't have film of Buchan - I'd give a lot to see him. And Hughie Gallagher.
