A friend, who supports Newcastle, told me that the Saudis would have preferred to have bought a club in London, where they already own a great deal of property. He believes that they may now be regretting their purchase of Newcastle when the opportunity exists to buy Chelsea.

The one thing I will say in a very limited defence of these russian oligarchs is that if they did, erm, pipe up (geddit??) about putin then he'd probably off them before you could say Salisbury Cathedral! So should Chelsea via Abramovich have their assets frozen, this would be rather interesting as many of them appearing on the balance sheet would be players. Would they be no longer be able to sell them to raise cash?
