According to the Sun (not that I read it, you understand) "Dagenham & Redbridge boss John Still, 62, is set to quit the League Two club and become Luton Town's new manager in a £1m deal." It seems that, even in the lower reaches of the football pyramid, there is money to burn.
But he is correct - all the graduates from Football Manager are seeking their first real positions - step forward Mitch
How does UEFA make this clean? As Swansea City have won the Capital One Cup, with a very big score, they have a seat in the Europa Cup. They are not English taking an English seat, I think Bradford City should have this space. At the end of the day Wales does have its own place or places.
Another thought. Imagine if UEFA decided that teams from nations with small populations could not enter so the big countries could have more seats. No Celtic, Ajax, Anderlecht, Young Boys etc, perhaps no Porto or Rosenborg, where will this stop? Danmörk will have no place so another Spanish team can enter, after all we get more money from television in Spain.
I'm fine with them in the league, representing England in Europe etc. They've been in the English league system long enough, so can hardly deny them a place in Europe if they have achieved it on merit What I would say is though that if they represent the English FA, they are representing England and everything that comes with that - ie the English flag, the anthem, etc. If they do not agree with that, they are welcome to enter the Welsh league, and try to represent Wales in Europe.
Ak, UEFA has already changed the rules concerning clubs from "nations from small populations". Every country affiliated to UEFA enters at least one club to both the Champions League and UEFA CUP. However, there are a series of qualifying rounds (beginning at the end of June) in which the smaller clubs compete (Welsh, Irish & Scottish clubs and even English clubs) with the winners able to compete in the "proper rounds". Thus it is still possible for a club from, say, the Faroe Islands or Lichtenstein to win one of the "prestigious" European club tournaments........
Cardiff and Swansea - like Berwick are in the anomalous position of not playing in thier own country. However considering both Cardiff and Swansea joined the English league as long ago as Watford - indeed Cardiff started in a hogher division than Watford it is a bit churlish to suddenly want to deny them a place they have had for over 90 years. Funny how when success comes people look for closing loopholes - ring any bells? Get over it - in football terms Swansea and Cardiff are and always have been part of the English structure - celebrate the differences that make life interesting - once you start throwing out the Welsh where would some people stop?
There's a certain team in Bedfordshire I'm sure I'd like to see out of the League.......ooops, they managed to drop out by themselves!!!
I might agree if it was consistent Lenny. Wales still get places in European competitions in their own right and have their FA, why should these 2 teams be treated differently? Berwick is different as the town straddles the border, which can hardly be said of Swansea. I cannot see why both these clubs should not re-join the Welsh leagues where they belong.
Swansea and Cardiff joined the English league when it suited the English to have them for financial reasons - why should they be kicked out now? They do not compete in the Welsh league or cups. Berwick is firmly in England and does NOT straddle the border and would not thank you for saying it does - blimey soon someone might say Cardiff is so near Bristol that it straddles the English border
Better strip them of the win yesterday then, because the anthem was specifically cancelled so as not to offend Swansea. True story.
Correct - it's well south of the border, although many of the children there actually do attend school in Scotland. The football club applied for entry into the Scottish League simply for reasons of economy - less distance to travel for away fixtures & I believe the town's rugby club play in the Scottish competition for the same reasons. About the only thing that they have in common with Scotland is that they tend to be rhotic speakers.
According to the Dag and Red fans Still likes to build teams over a period of time...not sure Luton fans would be that keen to wait as they expect results straight away.
