I am hoping the fact he did acknowledge that he changed things and got it wrong (and accepted that he made life harder for the players) means he won’t be doing it again. I could be wrong but I really do believe the midfield has to be built off a base of two back and one up, rather than one back and two up. Those two back need to be Charles and Downes together. Then play Charly/Arma or whoever you want as the more advanced midfielder.

Why is this so obvious to everyone except the managers that get paid to do it

Hope you don't mind the intrusion onto your board but hoping you can solve my question!
The name Southampton...is there a place called Hampton? If so should it not be South Hampton?

Dunno about that, but there is a place called Northampton, which imo should be called Wrong Hampton. Hope this helps

Hampshire takes its name from Southampton, and is called Southamptonshire on Victorian maps (sorry Skates). The Anglo- Saxon names Southampton and Hampshire was Hamptun and Hamptunscire,

Before the start of the season, I had seen these fixtures as the ones which would have prevented Martin from enjoying a good start. My anticipation was that it would be October before we started to pick up points. In the light of this, we have done well to accumulative the points we have to date nd been fortunate enough to have had the likes of Tell and JWP to jump start the season - if only for one match. I feel that we will have worked out the best line up by the close of these 6 fixtures and would then anticipate more stability.

11 points. Have included two draws but was also thinking we won’t draw many this season <laugh> really unsure on the Leeds and Ipswich games.

Leicester, Leeds and Ipswich all at home, not sure if that helps or not.

Commentator on Saturday said if you average at 2 points a game across the whole season you’ll probably be promoted, so 11 from 6 games wouldn’t be a bad return.

Anyone know which players are not on int. duty and actually staying with Saints this week?

Imagine there’s actually a fair few who will be going away, especially with a couple in the U21s.

Russ said he has about six players, but he was slightly exasperated (post match interview) and may have been exaggerating? Not sure on players.

because it doesn’t work that way. If you play with two holding midfielders who don’t progress the ball ie are instructed to stay back and defend then you will only have 4 attacking players and consequently have an under load in attack. To score we are generally looking to create overloads, hence in a Double pivot one player will generally be given freedom to roam up the field and one will be the holding player. Now we see full backs tucking in while in possession to create a 3-2 at the back and 6 players in attack. It’s simplistic to think that there is any one answer or any one formation that works for being tight at the back or scoring loads.

Russell Martin is currently trying to implement a guardiola approach with a squad that isn’t quite at man city’s level. Saturday was embarrassingly naieve and I reckon the next training sessions might be focused on what to do in the transition from attack to defence because Saturday we couldnt keep the ball very well and when we lost it nobody seemed to have any idea what to do.
