A reasonable article, although he jumps onto the recurring theme of... we hate this kit because there are no stripes..! The writer clearly ignores the fact that a significant proportion of those who don't favour the new kits are not doing so because there are no stripes but because the kits are simply f*****g ugly..! Yes, one supports the team and not the shirt, but does one have to watch 11 players run around in a cringe-worthy costume rather than a sleek and smart football kit..? And remember, before the writer condemns too quickly, there is revenue to be had from replica shirts, and there are some supporters who would rather not look like complete berks for having first laughingly parted with £50 to have to purchase that rag, but then to have to parade themselves to all and sundry, while ordinary people shake their heads in dismay, realising instantly that yet another football supporter with more money than sense has been duped once again. It's bad enough wearing a good looking football shirt in public. It'll be far more than doubly so wearing that abysmal creation. I'll be truly surprised if I see one in the high streets of Southampton.
Of course, had not read all of the gumf. it may look better on the flesh? Easy to criticise, I think it will grow on you especially if there are a few satisfactory performances, no one will give a hoot what we are wearing as long as it is red and white.
Great shirt. As someone else has said, its not about the stripes. For me its the stupid sleeves. Even Joe's shirt has the sleeves I think, but they are disguised because they are the same colour as the surrounding area.
I actually like the away shorts, may have to purchase a pair. Knowing Adidas though they will be about £40
Another wannabe tryo journalist mistaking his or her 'important' opinions for something worth reading. The shirts are basically the only tangible thing that 'Joe Public Average Supporter' gets to own from their fave club, everything else, results, atmosphere, experiences are just intangibles. So of course it matters what the shirt looks like! As for Waymas agent being slated for doing his job? How is/was he doing his job? Seems everything was set to go accept one tiny detail. Ivan Modias bank account needed topping up. Doing his job, my arse!
I meant the guy who wrote the article TheSecondStain not you of course, I'm in agreement with you.
OK reaction to the new shirt:- - Is it ugly? Well I don't think so, I'm not much of a fashion guru it tends to be a subject that bores me to death and I always looked down on the kind of guys at college and Uni who would be constantly combing their hair in the mirrori. Still I think saying its ugly is a huge exaggeration, its relatively plain. - Is no stripes a bad thing? In my opinion, yes. We basically had a season without them, I honestly couldn't care less about how much we sell in east asia, when it comes to footie I'm a staunch believer in tradition, and we had the stripes a lot longer than we had that badge. - Is the change in colour of the badge a bad thing? Not in my opinion, I always thought our badge looked a little dated, and all the various colours made it look a bit like a school badge. The best badges have only one or two colours, although I think Man U's red and yellow looks rubbish. So yeah I think one colour for the badge is a good thing. - Two out of three ain't bad, so whats why problem overall? The thing that clinches the 'why I don't like it' argument for me is that it looks generic, and that the people at adidas just got lazy and stuck our badge and sponsor on one of their plain red shirts. That fact alone makes us look cheap and reinforces the myth that we are a nobody club who got lucky and managed to reach the dizzy heights of the premier league somehow. I'm sick of all the Chelsea, Liverpool, Man U and Arsenal fans in my hometown laughing at the fact that I support Saints, we are an old proud club and I don't care what Adidas or any other major organization think.
Why has this thread accumulated 16 pages?! I for one am infinitely more concerned about the players wearing the kit rather than the kit itself. I'd be quite happy to play in pink and purple if we could sign Banega.
Sorry to break this to ya but not everyone is you. Yes OK so the importance of the kit is a little abstract, but that doesn't change the fact that its how we identify ourselves as fans, it still means something to most of us. If Cardiff can get used to playing in red I'm sure we can get used to this, but we feel like we have lost our identity. Now instead of looking like Sunderland and Stoke, we will look like Liverpool, United, Arsenal and Cardiff (with some differences obviously). Its just important to some people okay.
I's be happy with pink as long as it's the right shade. Everton had a black away kit with pink trim a couple of years ago and that looked really good.
And they had a tacky gold one as well. That's what bothers me with all the gold on our home shirt. It's like playing with sponsorship by Ratners.
Hate the thing! The gold lettering makes it look tacky - more like Primark than Premiership. The silly white strips across the shoulders - very 80's and the little white blob on the neck - ugh! I came to like lasts seasons shirt after a hesitant beginning - thankfully now I live overseas I am confident I cannot get one here - so I have a damned good excuse not to get one. As for those who say we should buy shirts to support the club - is a fair point - but (tough in cheek here) the club also have a responsibility not only to play classey football but to dress our players and therefore us (their fans) in something approaching, at the very least, tasteful... What with the hike in shirt prices - has April Fool's come late this year?
I'm not keen on the gold either, but I'd hardly throw it in the same category as the Pompey gold shirt. They did have something else in common with Ratners of course ...
Be interesting how the shirt sales go today. What is said on forums doesn't necessarily reflect what fans as a whole will do...I don't like the kit much but wouldn't have bought one anyway. It's what regular purchasers of kits do that matters...especially what the kids want. Last season was different because there was also the desire to have a PL kit and (in my opinion) the kit was good.
