Getting back to the Rooney debate, I agree with most of the views on here - he isn't world class. He seemed to be heading that way in his early career but hasn't quite developed into the player he should have been in my opinion. When I think of world class strikers, I think of Lineker, Shearer and Owen - but not Rooney.
I thought, or used to think that Rooney, Gerard and Cole were more or less world class. I thought they were possibly the players who other nations might want in their side. They are still good players, and Ashley Cole has made me change my mind about his ability which I doubted in his Arsenal days. But to be honest, not one of them would be in an all time squad of English players and do not deserve comparison with the greats.
i think it was summed up by the commentator when he mentioned that rooney hadn't scored a goal at a major competition since 2004. that's two world cups and one europa ago. not fit to polish peles boots, let alone fill them.
It's not our fault you have to dye your blue shirts red! In reality, Rooney is so far removed from Pelé, a scale hasn't been devised to measure it. Great clips of that magical Brazil side.
I have to say that Pele has been put on a pedestal that is a little higher than he really deserved, but he was a class act. Someone bought me his 'autobiography' for a Secret Santa and it is a truly awful read, please avoid as it is thoroughly embarrassing. Rooney is not a class act, he is a very good player but he is morally bankrupt and is not a role model for anyone other than a chav. Last night showed his ball control was terrible.
I agree about Pele and his autobiography. Pele is an amazing player but he didn't do it in Europe, difference between him and Maradona in my opinion.
