As I mentioned sometime in the last week, the majority of England managers don't come from "big" clubs: Alf Ramsey and Bobby Robson arrived from Ipswich, Hoddle from a pre-Roman Chelsea, Venables from a be-Sugared Spurs, Greenwood from West Ham (I should mention the abject failures - Keegan from Fulham, McClaren from Middlesbrough, Taylor from Villa) With the exception of Sven and Capello, all England coaches came from sides that were exceeding expectations. Traditionally, that would make Hodgson the prime candidate, with Pardew not far behind.
Very true. After fifty years plus that I've followed Spurs, I can safely say that being a Spurs supporter is not for those of a nervous disposition!
Alan Pardue is surely a better bet for England than Harry? Look what he's done, having lost key players, such as Carroll, Barton and Nolan - no, don't laugh! - and on a budget that makes Everton's look good.
Hodgson if not the best bet is certainly the best bet of the names being branded about. Surely no one could possibly think Harry was a better option than Roy if they knew anything about football. I personally think Roy would do well
Nolan and Barton also had too much influence in the dressing room that was causing friction in the squad - so Pardew shipped them out once their Premier League status was secure. That's something the England dressing room and its cliques need to have done to it, as they aren't willing to step aside or unite for the sake of the squad in general.
You seriously cannot be serious on this one ?? Pardew is nowhere near a good enough manager to tie Harry's shoe laces up. The guy might well be popular at the moment, but will soon get rumbled in the same way that last seasons 'flavour of the month' Owen Coyle, has been rumbled this season. Closer investigation on why Pardew has left some of his previous jobs might give you some insight into the type of guy he is. Believe me, he is a first class pratt.
Is this the same Hodgson who made a balls up of the Blackburn job ?? Is this the same Hodgson who made a balls up of the Liverpool job ?? I like to think I do know a bit about football, but if you seriously think Hodgson is a better choice for England tahn Harry, then you need to question how much you know about football.
You can't just go around naming English managers that are "in form" as in they are currently doing well as some of you need to understand managers all have their own personalities and "ways" and excel in certain environments but get eaten up in other environments, this is why Redknapp is popular as there is zero chance of him being "eaten up" (even tho he is quite meaty) as he is tough skinned, much like the late great bobby robson and the players will love working with him. Alan pardew is a good club manager and if he went to international level with England he would always feel like he has to prove something and thats dangerous you want a manager who doesnt feel he has anything to prove but has enough confidence to realise he is the best man for the job and will get the players to deliver, his way.
I agree completely. Hoddle and Venables were hounded out (Hoddle being on a god trip didn't help) by the media when they obviously had lots to offer. I fear the same fate for harry if he decides to accept the poisoned chalice.
In both cases, he was brought into clubs that were self destructing: He took Blackburn from relegation candidates to a 6th place finish, even though the club never replaced Alan Shearer elbowing defenders at every corner, before the rot set in once again the following season and the owners got an itchy trigger finger (but they still went down anyway), whilst Liverpool were suffering from the malaise that set in under Benitez, which couldn't, magnified by Torres looking unfit or disinterested the whole time he was there. Both cases involved a club whose primary source of goals wasn't there any more (Blackburn never replaced the Geordie goal hanger, and Torres was lacking form and fitness from the latter days of Benitez), and neither had the funds available for an adequate replacement when he was in charge.
humanbeingincroydon, with all due respect every manager can make excuses as to why it never worked, from blaming the chairman, to blaming injuries and fund available. However, when its all said and done, the manager and his coaching team train the players, pick the tactics, pick the team and blame will always go to the managers door and rightly so. Hodgson is not going to make a successful England manager, he just doesn't have it in him to succeed in a huge job in this country, with huge expectations, it just isn't him so we can sit here all week discussing the pros and cons of his career, however if Roy is made England manager, it will be a disaster and a backwards step.
As I've pointed out, two or three times, the only England managers to come from "big" clubs are Sven and Capello. The fact that England's two most successful coaches both managed Ipswich before taking the England job underlines this fact.
No! we have to consider other Ipswich managers: John Lyall George Burley Joe Royle Jim Magilton Roy Keane Paul Jewell
