From what I've seen of him, his goals, and from 2 MOM ratings, one at RB and one at CB in our first 5 games, he's made a very decent start to this season. I've been critical before, especially of his concentration lapses mainly at CB, but he's doing well now, and there cannot be that many better versatile defenders in this League.
As a defender I'd say he's a bit limited but performs at a higher level when got a decent center partner who's more vocal to help keep him focused etc. As a captain I'd say definitely not just look at last season where we lost a number of points because the team was under performing & where we needed a driving force to lead by example, gee up, cajole, scream if necessary basically anything to get teammates giving a bit more which the likes of Hill, Barton etc would do.
Beth, I totally share your doubts. I don't like him as a RB, not least because he offers nothing going forward. As a CB, he is OK to good in the SBC. He's not the strongest winner of a ball in the air but, for a CB, he is quick, physical and prepared to put his body in the way. As a captain, he seems to suffer from permanent stage fright. I like my captains to follow the Joey/Clint model: defences need to be organised, responsibilities allocated and team mates cajoled into giving every last per cent of effort. You don't achieve that by telepathy.
NED & JET in the team - perhaps we should target a few of the other lower league names on that team? TED will be delighted! Emmanuel-Thomas In Team Of The Week (30/8/16) please log in to view this image Gillingham are represented in the latest Football League team of the week that has been selected after this week's action. The performance by Jay Emmanuel-Thomas in the three two victory over Shrewsbury Town at the weekend at the Greenhous Meadow was enough to earn them a place in the side alongside the other most impressive performers in the Football League pyramid. I think we'll already know ourselves, and not just based on the latest performance, why Emmanuel-Thomas was selected as part of the team but explaining the choice - the FL blurb read. 'Trailing 2-0 to Shrewsbury Town, Emmanuel-Thomas inspired the Gills to a sensational comeback at Greenhous Meadow. Two goals, including one stunner, drew his side level, and he was involved in Max Ehmer`s dramatic late winner — a goal which capped off a pretty good few days for Justin Edinburgh`s men.' It's always good to see the club represented in this way, and well played to Emmanuel-Thomas for his recognition, but the most important thing about the weekend was of course the win.
