No, we got attacked by Manc's as we were getting in a taxi, my mates were pulling me in with mancs trying to pull me out, but we got away ok
Gillingham play off semi 2nd leg, Christ that was dramatic 4-3 and still went down. But Newcastle 0-2 Sunderland 1990 the ever for me.
I was there. We were winning 2-1 at half time and a f*cking bog seat went whizzing past my head. Gutted to have lost but did we not both go up or did we follow the next season.
Probably 90s? when we beat Newcastle thru there in the play off game. Wasnt actually the best but the fact we more or less suspected/knew we were gonna get promotion because of Swindons farcical f*ck up makes it the best for me.
One for me was the if-we-win-by-4-clear-goals-we'll-go-top-with-2(?)-games-to-go 6-2 v sheff utd inc alex sabella wilf rostron hat trick siddall last min pen save, game.
For me the best home game was Burnley. Had the lot! Missed penalty by Connelly and one scored by an ex player of ours Gray? Then Connelly showed his bottle by taking another pen and scoring. Also Wade Elliot scored a wonder goal if i remember right before the ultimate wonder goal by Edwards! Im sure it was a counter attack and it was something like 10 seconds from our own box to putting it in the net. The back drop to this game was that we lost away to Colchester the game before and it was getting tight at the top. Great night and atmosphere!
Can't really comment on anything before the Reid era as I wasn't around so: Top 3: 3) When we beat Man City 1-0, the one where Ji rounded the keeper (even though he was a yard offside). We'd been battered for 94 mins, hardly had a kick and then time completely stood still as he went round the keeper. Seemed like an eternity for the ball to go in. 2) Chelsea 3-2 those 2/3 minues where Borini equalise and Defoe scored the winner. That's the loudest we've been for years, and I'm including the Derby's. That sense of relief that we were actually going to stop up and with the Mags only drawing away at Villa just made it even sweeter. 1) That Burnley game (which we've all mentioned). Carlos Edwards - if the net hadn't stopped that ball I'm almost certain it'd still be going now. That was back in the days where the Black Cats Bar was open to anyone and when we went up after the match the place was bouncing. Loads of Irish people were over (Keane era), the craic and atmoshere was electric. Pretty sure I've probably missed some completely obvious ones, but never mind. These were the first 3 that immediately sprung to mind.
As I recall that was a midweek game under lights and cold. Not a big crowd either, so those of us who were there got to keep those memories all to ourselves!! Despite the score line I suspect most of the crow, but particularly ME, considered Alex Sabella to have been MotM. He was absolute magic, even up to Shack Standard.
My memory (ha ha) tells me after we scored to go 4-1 up (excited, nearly the 4 goal win needed), he walked through our lot to score, 4-2, with only 5 (?) mins to go. I do definitely remember at this point a lad from school and his dad left early, we scored 2 more, then Siddall saved the last minute pen at the Roker end, then back to the dray & horses to celebrate our almost certain nothing could go wrong imminent promotion. I was young, I soon learnt.
There was around 29,000 there that night I think there was close on 30,000 there that night which wasn't too bad for a midweek second division game at that time..
Aye I was at that game, the Sunderland crowd were going mad trying to tell the dozy ref about the sub!!!
The Chelsea game at the SOL which was 4 nill at half time after being humbled by them 4 nill away first game of the season. Why Quinn and Phillips were lashing them in from everywhere that season, loved it
