Also from the 80's I remember a game against West Ham when I think we won 4-3 and Kieron Brady was ripping teams a new one. His career lasted all of a few months like but hey ho.
Some great games mentioned. Play off final is the best game ever at old wembley but probably not the best sunderland game if only because of the final score. @comm I think SKP was substituted off by the time pens rolled around. Burnley was a good game and my only experience of corporate hospitality at SoL. As good as Edwards goal was I'll remember it most for telling Eric Gates he shouldn't let Malcolm MacDonald talk so much **** about us on the radio. I missed 5-0 v Tranmere at home and was gutted. At least until the the following week 7-0 v Oxford. Celebrated by spraying cheap lemonade around like champagne. Kids. Didn't see the 4-1 v Chelsea, I was working as I recall (**** job in the MetroCentre). Gutted about that but have been assured the latest win surpassed it. At least I was there for that one and my pick of best game for result, goals, importance and atmosphere. Tranmere away has been mentioned as a game we lost in our promotion season - was that the one where they had 12 players on the pitch for a setpiece they scored from? or was that one of many cup games we faced them in? i got a bit sick of going to the wirral for the 3rd round of the league cup again and again.
The 12th man was a cup game. Ducking scandal that it wasn't replayed. They never had 12 on the park they subbed the red carded man. They should have been kicked out there were 15 mins or so left when he was sent off. We'd have lost next round anyway of course.
It was a cup game - but they had 11 men on the field after having a player sent off - when he went off the field, a sub entered the field and the referee ****ed up by not counting correctly.
I seem to remember that there was a last minute sending off, in the confusion Tranmere brought on a substitute in place of the bloke who was sent off. From the resulting free kick we whipped the ball into the area, which was headed away by the bloke who shouldn't have been on the pitch. Full time whistle was blown! I know it would have been harsh on Tranmere (although maybe not because what they did was ****ing stupid) but I would have thought that it would have been at least been replayed. If we had been a club with plenty of clout I think it would have been. They fielded a player who shouldn't have been on the pitch which I would have thought would be an automatic forfeit. It didn't matter whether it was for only a minute or two.
i didn't check the poster and thought "comms on the pop early today" seemed like we went thru a phase of getting drawn against tranmere and leicester a lot around the promotion seasons.
I checked the TV. **** all on. So i am now retired outdoors with a git big fan. No doubt the spelling will go tits up and the swearing escalate over the coming hours. But i will try .
1973, FA Cup 5th round replay against Man City. 3-1. 52 thousand in Roker Park. Packed tight in the Roker End, when the crowd surged I just lifted my feet up!
I was there, mate Was it not John Aldridge who took the penalty? We were still celebrating when the ball hit the back of the net, he nearly ran towards us celebrating at one point
First game you cried at? Wimbledon 1 - 0 Sunderland Final game of the season, in our first time in the Premier league and we were relegated on that day. I was gutted
I did tear up a bit. I was there. Spurs/coventry? Shamble. ****ing gutted. Thankfully i only had to travel not to far.
I was at that game was a hell of a game then got a halfie on me head on the way back to the bus. Manc t**ts - It wasn't you (or your dad) was it Tel?
