right, off to walk the walk...4 long ones to go before the big day..in 5 hours that'll be 3...woohoooo! i'm not enjoying them now, wish i had company, i'm bored of the same ol' music! 17 miles coming up...see you later ttfn and thank you...coz you're all amazingly supportive and i'm extremely grateful xxx
Hornette - How do you measure your mileage? We used to use the original mile markers that are along the Grand Union - they show the number of miles from Braunston. Thing is, some miles seemed to be quite a bit longer than others - there was one particular mile that we could just not get under 14 mins, whilst the previous mile we could do in 12 mins!! Still wonder how the Victorian Canal Builders worked out those distances..
I`m guessing here W-y but if you had your boat ravelling at a set speed , then with a time keeping device you would be able to work it out! the flaw in this system is on some of the canals are linked to rivers and hence have a current whereas if you have a stretch with locks ,the current will be slower! I can well believe that the mile markers along the canal will have a lot of variation! I think Hornette is a bit more up to date and prob uses a step meter or a gps app on her phone
Norway - Also, I assume that these were "canal miles" and not straight miles - the GU has huge loops and curves in places between Leighton B and MK.
Well, i'm back, dripping..it's hot out there! i use the mile markers on the canal for incentive w-y, but i have an app on my phone that measures speed and miles and calories burned and how long it takes the kettle to boil, etc etc lol. i ran out of water today but managed to stop at a water tap for the canal boats, and no need for a loo stop either, it's very warm! lol. I have noticed that some of the mile markers are missing altogether, i've never found '77' or '80'...but the first one for me is at Rickmansworth and that's '75'. I've never walked towards Braunston though, but i have friends who live there, it's strange that it's Braunston that is at the end of the mile markers. It's not the end of the canal..is it? I don't think so...hmm..must ask them when i see them next! Today i wore the tee shirt that came in the post..the white one with the bra printed on it. Never again. I've discovered that if you wear the tee shirt, everyone wants to talk to you, or make jokes with you. It's very friendly down on the canal, but i really don't want to be held up. Just a 'good morning' would do lol. So, today's time, bearing in mind that i didn't do Batchworth Hill today...coz er...well, it's 'lady things week' so i won't go into it, but i didn't have the energy for steep hills today lol...anyway...i did 17.22 miles in 4 hours, 11 minutes and 55 seconds! That's my fastest time (no steep hill lol) though i did stop a couple of times but i'm putting that down to 'lady things' lol. (i haven't counted the stops but they were very short! lol). It felt good for the first half today, i was very ahead of schedule, but the walk back was harder...i think it'll be different on the day, simply because i won't be able to get off to a quick start, so i'll have to catch up somehow nearer the end...perhaps! Time now to jump in the shower and head out for lunch ...ttfn x
Hornette - Great going. We used to start around marker 45 or 43 and go north, but a few markers in MK are missing - probably melted down! I'll give you a few tips in getting the best start you can!
thank you Leonardo! mmmwah! w-y Ooh that'll be great, yes please! Norway - Thank you! lol...lucky dogs!
I dont know Hornette if you were to do the event tomorrow against W-y , I think I would back you (depending on the odds lol)
