It didnt matter back then as every team was at it so was a kind of level playing field. Right up until the era of Tony Adams and Paul Merson. I think after that footballers became more athletes than footballers. Merson told a great story about being drunk while playing for Arsenal against Liverpool and he reckoned he had a great game
I kid you not but in a Far East tour in the 70s I played against Huddersfield Town and Frank Worthington had a cig on in the half way line just before he kicked off. In the same tournament I played against Man Utd and they had 2 players with bottles of beer in the tunnel on their way out.
