Leeds United: Conor McGilligan expects Whites to sign Eddie Nketiah please log in to view this image The Elland Road outfit secured their Premier League survival with a 2-1 win at Brentford on the final day after being helped out by Burnley’s defeat to Newcastle United. Given they finished in the top half during the 2020/21 campaign, they will be looking to improve massively next term – and to do so, they will likely need new recruits. A striker could well be on the wishlist, and McGilligan already feels like he knows he could be coming in. He wrote on Twitter, “It’ll be Eddie Nketiah, won’t it?” There was certainly a defeatist feel to McGilligan’s tweet, although it is not clear why. Leeds clearly need a striker, with Patrick Bamford injured for the majority of this campaign, while backup option Tyler Roberts managed just one goal in the league. £9m-valued Nketiah, who was described as ‘phenomenal’ by current manager Mikel Arteta, has had to wait for his chance at Arsenal, but he showed glimpses of what he can do in front of goal this term. He netted five strikes in eight starts towards the end of the season, including two in a 4-2 victory over Chelsea at Stamford Bridge, and has a healthy 23 goals in 92 games for the club considering the majority of those appearances have come from the bench. He is already familiar with Leeds, too, having scored five times in 19 appearances as the Yorkshire team earned promotion to the Premier League in 2019/20. Nketiah is soon to be out of contract, so it would surely be an astute signing on a free.
I'd love him to stay he's a game changer with skill, fight, coolness under pressure and he was a friggin bargain to boot what more can you want, but if he has to or wants to go then it's got to be at a cost....a big one
What would Leeds get if he had to retire through injury just after signing. Honestly it's a genuine question. Earlier this year i bought something and colkected it from manchester. About five weeks later i sold it for double the money. So i say if we get an offer three times what he cost then sell. Remember a bird in the hand is not as good as one in the bush.
But his goals earned the club in excess of £100m by keeping us in the PL That penalty on the final day, if Bamford hadn’t caught Covid, it doesn’t bare thinking about
Raphinha is one of the most naturally gifted players we have had for a very long time. Add to that his desire and passion, albeit verging on mental sometimes, think the Ayling sending off. We should be thinking about building a team around this type of player not flogging to make a quick buck. Yes Orta got this one right credit where it is due.
Ultimately Harrisons goal did it for us. The much maligned Harrison. Yes Burnleys result in the end helped, but the players didn't know the final result at the time.
yup the much maligned Harrison wanted by Newcastle and spurs… what do they see that some of our fans don’t? He was out of form early in the season, but still has a good goal return and his assists are only down because there was no one there to get on the end of a lot of good looking balls into the box. Great first touch, plenty of skill, chips in with goals. puts in a defensive shift and works his nads off. Also he came good in some big moments this year. He’s not the second coming, his passing can be sloppy and he’s a yard of pace short of real top level. But well down the list of players to replace unless the offer is stupid and/or he wants to leave.
Harrison has a great attitude, yes a greedy twat and sometimes sees the wrong option, but works in the close season with fitness and mental coaches. Always trying to improve
ideally yes but there’s a food chain and we’re not at the top of it. If we had billionaire owners like Newcastle we’d have bought big last summer and might have surrounded raph and Phillips with other top players… and been able to keep them. We don’t. So we have to evolve more gradually and that means cashing in on players that have outgrown us and reinvesting in guys of similar talent but younger, cheaper, less proven. Obviously these guys are also higher risk so there will be misses… and you have to have faith in your DOF which not everyone has! I’m fine with the approach… and fine with the players who want to play at the very highest level we’re not able to offer them. When Raph goes we should thank him for what he’s done. He seems a decent guy, genuinely felt an obligation to keep us in the Prem. Which as his employer, you would demand no less… but it’s not always the case. No sign he was trying to activate a relegation release clause on Sunday!
Get rid of Rodrigo, Firpo, Roberts and Bamford. Should bring in about £40m. Keep the rest. Build the team around Raphinha, Phillips and Aaronson. Bring in one or two prolific strikers (rotating with Gelhardt) and a quality left back. Our CB’s are decent. Koch will prove to be the best one. Closely followed by Struijk. No need for wholesale changes. There already exists a great team spirit among this group. Just need to build on the best of what we have.
