We all see the game differently. Mes makes some great saves. All keepers make mistakes but in my view mes lets in a few too many fairly soft ones that he seems to get a free pass on… and has a bit of a habit of parrying saves back into the danger zone. He’s improved on crosses but still has his moments and his distribution isn’t great. Seems to divide fans. Most Leeds fans love him, a few see him as a liability. I see him as very good for his age but still a way off being a top PL keeper. If all these top clubs are genuinely after him, my view is it’s potential they see. It’s just another individual’s opinion but Didier Deschamps doesn’t see him as one of France’s top 3 keepers, and one of those 3 warms the bench for West Ham. I’m happy if he stays but, if a big money offer comes in I’d happily take it.
He had to be restrained by Costa coffee so can't see how they can call it wrongful dismissal TBH. please log in to view this image
The mistakes he makes though are ones he'll learn from. Like when he used to play the ball out centrally, we'd lose possession and then concede. That hasn't happened for quite a while now as he's progressed and improved his judgement. The error at Everton, which cost us the game, is one he probably won't ever do again as well. On the positive front not sure what the stats say but he seems to excel when facing an opponent through on goal and his general all round play is very good. Or to put it another way if we'd had the Leicester keeper in goal this season I'm pretty sure we'd be doomed now. It would have to be crazy money for us to consider offers before the summer of 2024 IMHO. You say big money and you'd happily sell, which is fair enough, as long as big money is not £30M.
All things that will improve with experience and as someone else pointed out we have had some shocking goalkeepers in recent years.
I'm with Jammy for once. Meslier is already a decent keeper but his potential is huge. Because of his age I'd be demanding massive money for him. 60 million.
Just watching Barnsley v Sheff Wed. Fans are right up for it the sad barstewards...jeez it's L1 for fooks sake
I don’t disagree re the potential in mes infact I said it myself. My gut genuinely, is that his distribution will never be great… marsch had him hoofing it long, gracia seems happy for him to play it out so maybe we’ll see a bit better where he’s at. Agree with with jamster re 1 on 1’s - he’s excellent at them, makes himself big ( he is pretty big anyway) and generally gets his angles and timing right. goalkeeper shot saving stats are tricky in my view … the ‘best’ and I use the word advisedly is effectively a measure of xg against for shots on target the keeper has faced. For what it’s worth on % saves v shots and xg against for shots on targets, mes is actually pretty low down the Prem charts. Obviously that can be positioning as much as shot stopping ability, and personally whist I think xg is a useful stat to show what chances your side is creating and giving up… I’m not sure it’s a fair reflection on keepers. It is though a reminder when people talk about his great stops, that he doesn’t save the same percentages of them as the top guys. No shame in that, it’s the best league in the world snd they’re all older than him.
For you stat boffins out there... (i know you're secretly out there ) - the highlighted column shows how many goals up or down a side is compared to what the keeper would be expected to save on average based on the quality of the chances of the opposition. The Southampton keeper has had a mare, for which we were grateful a few weeks back... but what this really says is one of two things... either Mes (3rd bottom) hasn't had a great season... or opposition players have got lucky/good and hit their goal of the month contender against us. From what I've witnessed, it's been a bit of both
