lol no I was trying to be serious with my question, just wondered about people's opinions on whether those figures are good or bad, and especially on whether Jammy thinks they are good or bad
lol those stats dont relate to Bamford though, they are for a different striker however to give you some context, Rodrigo figures for shots/goals from within the 6 yard box was 100%. He had 4 shots and scored 4 times
As bare figures they don't sound good but then it would all depend on the context of the chance. Are they unopposed tap ins or maybe a wall of players on the line following an indirect free kick for example ? Stats are great but my own personal view is that forming an opinion, or making a judgement on a player with the naked eye is still the best way. We could all see that Bamford (again as an example) missed chances he should have scored last season and he definitely should have hit the target on many more occasions than he did.
I asked the question because I felt that 70% was too high a percentage. And whilst I agree that when quoting stats, there is always context to take into account, which is why I stuck to goals scored within the 6 yard box, as I personally felt that would be the best chance of achieving the 70% success rate mentioned by yourself, as that is when most fans would expect their star striker to actually score more times than not. As for the stats, those relate to Erling Haaland (nothing to do at all with Paddy ). He had 19 shots within the 6 yard box last season, he put 11 of them wide, the keeper saved 1, no shots were blocked and he scored 7 times. By way of comparison Ivan Toney had a 42% conversion rate from within the 6 yard box, scoring 8, having 4 saved, 1 blocked , and failed to hit the target on 6 occasions. So scoring between 35-45% of your shots at goal from within the 6 yard box, doesnt seem as bad as probably many, including both myself and yourself would at first consider, although I was expecting that to be more in line with the 70% you mentioned. I was trying to prove you correct, but not even the top 3 goalscorers in the EPL last season, could achieve that result, from what is probably overall the best scoring chances they would have, other than from a penalty kick. As for Paddy, his return was 10%, scoring once from 9 shots, 2 were saved, 1 was blocked and 5 missed the target totally Edit - Sorry forgot to mention Kane, who's conversion rate from within the 6 yard box was 60%, scoring 9 from 15 chances
2019-20 Championship winning season 2020/21 Premier League 2021-22 Premier League Premier League 22/23
Well that puts that one to bed. hearing we close to signing Nat Phillips too everything done bar a medical if the rumours are right.
There you go. That's a fair representation of Bamford last season 17 shots on target all season from 27 appearances
My 70% ish for Bamford was based on him scoring 66% of his xg figure during our Championship winning campaign. Obviously I then rounded it up to make it more fun
Well we did watch our equivalent Aaronson last season, he was the exact opposite of butch, would have done nicely in the woman's game
Please Jammy don't go there I looked at those figures earlier, for the top 22 players on XG for that season, and decided that it would do more harm than good if I posted them. Nakki Wells scored 158% of his XG figure that season
My 2p worth re. Bamford .... Bielsa stated that most teams expect to score 1 in 3 chances, yet we only managed 1 in 6. This translated into a relentless 'Bamford is ****e' belief for many. However, Bamford was not the focus of Bielsa's statement - it was the whole fcuking team!!! Sure, Bamford was a major contributor to this failing, but no-one chose to check anyone else's failings in the dept., as we had a fall guy to focus the hate on. And how people have focussed! Relentlessly. The lad is not missing deliberately. Nor is he injured deliberately. Yet to hear the cacophony of unfair abuse thrown at him, makes me wonder if some of our 'fans' know what it is to be a supporter. They are not the same. Some need to get the dictionary out to see what the definition of supporter is .....
