Ben White MOTM tonght Can't remember seeing an Arsenal side defend a onslaught like that in a long time, especially with ten men.
what part of it doesn’t make sense? You mean why would they sell their main striker if they didn’t have to? Good question but you can put in a release clause that can only be activated in the summer to stop someone being sold against your will in January and disrupting your season . That makes sense. A club then offers you the figure you’d previously agreed to in the release clause… in this case set higher than you’d ever expect to get… in January. The club are not contractually obliged to take it. However the chairman realises its over the odds given players age and decides to cash in. maybe influenced by player saying he wants to go.. and that they’d rather have motivated players at the club. Or maybe because he just wants the cash and thinks they’ll get by or are going down anyway. Who knows. there are two versions of the story doing the rounds. One is it was a straight release clause activated and nothing Burnley could do about it… and the other the ‘summer only’ version I gave above. no connection to Burnley so no idea which is true. By the by, it’s believed Newcastle are actively targeting players with release clauses as they get quoted double money otherwise and it facilitates a quick deal.
I agree, I didn’t actually think much of him and thought when he came back from injury he’d be behind Coops, Llorente and Struijk but looking like we’ve got 4 cracking CBs but Llorente is now beginning to become a worry. Maybe Koch and Struijk or Koch and Cresswell is the future.
They’re going to lose a damn sight more than the £20 million they got from Newcastle if they go down, which suggests to me there was nothing they could do once the release clause fee was met.
...and you're very possibly right, but the potential also exists that the chairman thought that £25m was too good... and that wood's 3 goals this season didn't look like guaranteeing safety either. Like i said, two stories/versions have been circulated, only those directly involved no for sure
Sorry mate. You don’t sell to a direct relegation rival mid season unless you have no choice. I just don’t believe the other version.
I agree it would be unusual, though I’m sure many of our fans would be delighted if we sold Roberts to Newcastle. But seriously, you believe what you want. I just reported what was reported.
