Misread that. Thought it was £4.2m, so was coming round slowly to his return. But £42m? No chance! Seriously, though, he was brilliant for Bielsa's Leeds, where he had a very specific role. Not a lot since, imo. Other than that, I think the lad is very good, but he's been ably replaced by Adams, who imo, is more mobile, faster, more skilled, & far, far more rounded. Yet I wouldn't buy Adams for £42m!, so Phillips has no chance. He can get skelfs off the Manc bench wondering what to do with all of his money, as far as I'm concerned.
For me Phillips and Adams are different players, KP is more disciplined in holding his role, Adams as good as he has been, does tend to drift at times and that as cost us a couple of times this season, I think they would compliment onecanother rather than fight for the same role. But at the money Citeh would want and the wage, its a no go as far as I'm concerned. Newcastle could well be his next destination if he was to move
But isn't it the case that as a 1, he had to be disciplined in stayig back. Yes, Adams does go forward, but as part of a 2, his opposite number should pivot back to cover. I do see what you're saying, though. Try as I might, I just can't picture Adams doing the DM role that Phillips did for Bielsa.
Spot on here Gessa. I don’t know how much Adams occasional wanderings were down to High press expectations. He certainly made a bad decision for the first goal at Villa, likely influenced by a swarm press mentality. Whichever, he’s generally been great for us. He’s a much better athlete than Phillips but doesn’t have his range of passing, which when you’re setting tempo and building attacks is a very useful attribute. I said at the time he left that I don’t think kp is as effective in a defensive midfield 2 as he is in a 1… but even so, Phillips and Adams would compliment each other really well. My issue with him returning would be injury-history and cost related, not football related. Now… if he could bring his new besty Erling with him?!

Our win ratio was always far worse when KP didn’t play compared to when he did and that has been no different this season despite our so called better squad.
