Unfortunately I agree. From L'Equipe. 4 days ago. Marseille have ended their interest in Leeds United goalkeeper Illan Meslier, according to reports in France. L’Equipe claim the French side have deemed the shot-stopper as too expensive and will look for alternative targets. Leeds were thought to have demanded around £20m for the Frenchman, who at 24 is still relatively young for a goalkeeper. New Marseille manager Roberto De Zerbi had been keen to bring Meslier back to his native France
23rd July; "Leeds United manager Daniel Farke has today announced his leadership group for the upcoming 2024/25 campaign. Ethan Ampadu has been named as captain, with Pascal Struijk and Illan Meslier named as vice captains." Seems like he's going nowhere.
He doesn’t command his box when crosses come in and I remember him bottling a few one-on-ones last season as well. I’m struggling to find what he is good at.
Saying all that, I do believe he’s good enough for this level. When he first arrived, I thought he’d develop into a terrific keeper. He catching of crosses was an issue, and his distribution needed a lot of work. Think he’s improved both, a bit, but he’s not made the improvements I’d hoped for. Hopefully the mistake he made for the Portsmouth opener will be it for the season.
I question if the goal keeping coaches here are good enough. When you have a young 21 year old keeper at a Championship level club, I wonder if it would be worth paying a top level PL team to accept your keeper for training for 3 months at a time
