Last season I was a bit of a killjoy as I could see we were going down even before we were in the bottom four. Our GD was awful and that would send us down. Pirate the only thing that is holding out any hope for me is that we have shown we are capable of a decent run. I cant believe we will take this god awful form straight through to the end of the season, surely we will pick up a little bit of form in a moment. I went to Flaine in France, it was fantastic with great weather. It was my birthday on Friday and I enjoyed it a little too heavily. Thank you for asking! Go on i'm waiting
Flaine is great, ok it's a bit concretey apart from the newer bits but the skiing is fantastic - I went to Samoens about 10 years ago which shares the same Grand Massif ski area. I'm a fanatical skiier Banksy, so when you said you were going I immediately became jealous (so yes, you did get that bit right!). Trying to squeeze a Friday to Tuesday break in to Morzine with some mates at the end of the month - but the wife is making grumbling and complaining sounds..... Oh and happy birthday for last Friday. I couldn't care less about football afiliation when skiing is concerned!!
Actually I stayed is Samoens but said Flaine for simplicity (As you will know Flaine is quite well known) BB we have something very much in common here, I am as keen a skier as can be and love Morzine too, the snow is fantastic and they are expecting more next week. Best trip I have been on for great weather. (been about 36 times in all) Go for it, and buy her something nice in Geneva airport.. she'll forgive you eventually. (my mrs loves skiing too so I am lucky) Went on a lads to Pas de la casa last week in Jan and it was -31 in the village at night, total disaster and they shut the lifts too, thank god for Jagermeister. Must admit the city result was both expected and numbed by the fact I was skiing. I would live there if I could.
Been to the Portes du Soleil about 8 times - Chatel and Avoriaz but Morzine is by far my favourite - great town. Yep, the weather and snow is great out there at the mo - a friend came back last week. La Chavanette is a bit icy though - wouldn't want to fall at the top.....again! Blimey we do have something in common apart from our mutual loathing I've skiied every year since I was ten and I'm now in my early 40s and also got my wife hooked on it. Problem is I've got three boys aged 5 to 18 months so my wife has missed out on a pretty regular basis over the last few years and she's becoming more and more resistant to my forays away with the lads. Never skiied Andorra, 'though my mate has got a village house near St Lary Soulain that we go out to occasionally. Same bloke did actually live in Morzine for 2 years - he's high up in Lloyds TSB and took a sabbatical over there with his family, lucky ****er. If I had my time again I'd spend a considerable part of it living in the Alps. Still think I can swing it at the end of the month, although next year it will be time to take the eldest two lads with us......
I skied Andorra 2 years ago in Soldeu next resort to Pas de le casa loved it there, a little commercialised but used to go Schladming in Austria. They have the world down hill championship, but not a lot of visitors apart from that so not a lot a queing for lifts. Never been to the French Alps Mrs has damaged her knee so don't go that much anymore. My daughter was 7 when she first went took to it like a duck to water. Have you tried boarding yet? Tried it once but went back to the skies
Nothing better than seeing the kids get on it, both mine are flying and my daughter is determined to be an instructor, sounds like yours are about to go. Special times ahead. bit galling when they start flying past you though, I really have to pull out all the stops in a race these days and my 17 year old boy is so close to beating me now, its months away.. Is la chavenette 'the swiss wall'? Yes I have skied down that one a couple of times, you need to stay left heading down for the best chance of survival. No more loathing from me, anyone who skis and has tackled The Wall has my utmost respect.
Never tried boarding Red, I have always been reluctant to spend the time learning when I can use it to ski. My knees are getting a battering these days from football past and skiing now and 4 days flat out is getting to be my limit, I generally go on a lads trip with about 40 of us each January and the boarders of my age are finding it tougher these days.. Trouble is its a very competitive world and I still think I am 25.. Been to Soldeu a few times, the villager bar has good live music. I love it..
Yep, my 5 and almost 4-year old will be donning their first planks next year. That's the thing with kids - absolutely fearless once they've learnt to fall down a few times. Yes Chavanette is The Wall. Petrifying first time and I fell whilst picking the wrong line (to the right!) through some monstrous moguls my first time down - probably went a couple of hundred feet before I could stop myself - scared me ****less! OK now though - just stay left and nice sharp turns! ROD - tried boarding and monoskis - both highly unnatural! Out of a group of 10 of my mates, six are boarders converted from skiing. But not me - it's all wrong. Anyhow gents - I'm calling it a night. Fine skiing banter - perhaps we should start the Bristol snowsports thread....!
Ahh Skiing - you guys are typical skiers, once you start talking about skiing you can't stop - I used to drive all my mates nuts about skiing. No doubt I have the ugliest style but there aren't many 'blacks' I couldn't manage. First went in the early 80's with Mrs R and then took the kids when they were 5 and 7 respectively. Our first holidays were in Austria but ended up skiing the 3 Valleys. Unfortunately Mrs R stopped going by '89 so I just went with the kids each year and a separate hol with the lads. Favourite ski was over to Valdizzery from Tigne off piste using ropes down through grottos. Haven't been for 3 years but still have all the kit and hope to go again one day.
Banksy you ought to get your daughter on those working holidays, my cousin done one whole year in Canada in the 80's and one done it for 2 seasons the last few years! Chalet maid then skiing on days off she loved it put of mid wifery uni whilst she done it. My son went out this year to Les Merguines thought it would be the making of him but he choose to ski when should of been working. Got sent home gutted for him living the dream only to blow it. Anyway when your out there working you get the chance to show off to be an instructor, my eldest looked into it but was 7k doing it from scratch, so he is looking to do the working trip and try and catch a break whilst over there. Thinking about it now just wants me to hit the slopes more! Hopefully the Mrs will be up for it next year even though she don't Ski, she just loves the Apri Ski but has wanted to try it but her knee has always prevented it.
