https://www.lotuseaters.com/on-the-need-to-ask-awkward-questions-5-05-23 To the untrained eye, Banaz Mahmod seemed like an ordinary 20-year-old immigrant going about her daily life in the capital. Hailing from Iraqi Kurdistan, Banaz and her family sought asylum in the United Kingdom when she was only 10 years old. Growing up in a strictly conservative family with four sisters and a brother, Banaz was raised in Mitcham, South London, by her father Mahmod Babakir Mahmod and his wife, Behya. But in private, Mahmod's life was anything but ordinary. As a child, she was subjected to female genital mutilation (FGM) at the hands of her grandmother. Like her eldest and youngest sisters, Banaz was then forced into an arranged marriage with a man ten years her senior. He proceeded to abuse and rape her, and though her family were aware of her suffering, she was made to stay with him out of shame and fear of the dishonour it would bring to their community. In the summer of 2005, Banaz Mahmod announced that she had met another man with whom she had fallen in love. Desiring to make a fresh start, she asked her family for a divorce; however, they objected. In December, she overheard her parents plotting to kill her for bringing shame to the family. Fearing for her life, she contacted the Metropolitan Police, but they failed to act. On the morning of January 24th, 2006, Banaz's parents went shopping, leaving her sleeping at home. Three of her male relatives, Mohamad Marid Hama, Mohammed Saleh Ali, and Omar Hussain, entered the property and inflicted hours of brutal rape and torture on Banaz before strangling her to death. Her body was then stuffed in a suitcase, transported 100 miles to a house in Birmingham, and buried. Unfortunately, the case of Banaz Mahmod is not an outlier. The official statistics on honour killings betray the fear of reporting such events; in the year up to March 2022, 2,887 honour-based abuse (HBA) offences were recorded by the police, along with 77 cases of FGM and 141 forced marriage offences. It is far too easy to simply mourn and chalk up such cases to misfortune, for asking difficult questions or criticising certain communities will only get you accusations of victim shaming. But the only victim in this case, I would argue, was a young woman who loved another man. We are socially conditioned not to judge how some people live their lives, but this dangerous metaethics is flawed when it comes to understanding human behaviour. In the UK, the impact of cousin marriage cannot be ignored—a study by Patrick Nash estimates that 38-59 per cent of British Pakistanis are married to their cousins, leading to a loss of trust and fragmented cohesion in the community. Pakistani communities in Bradford, Rotherham, Birmingham, and London face the biggest difficulties in cultural assimilation. Failed integration has brought Islamist fundamentalism, internecine religious protests, and grooming gang child sex scandals to our shores. Thousands of young white working-class girls have been abused for years because those in power were afraid to speak out for fear of being labelled racist. And when it is discussed, the issues are primarily attributed to religion. I would like to suggest that a large part of it is cultural. Contrary to what cultural relativists say, not all cultures are equal and wonderfully harmonious. It was not until the 6th century that the Catholic Church outlawed incest and cousin marriage. It forced people to cross tribal boundaries and marry others, dissolving traditional values and replacing them with new ones. This helped create a new shared European identity, and according to Stephen Stich of Rutgers University, it helps explain the emergence of democracy in the West. Unfortunately, the ban was rescinded in England with the passing of the Marriage Act of 1540. Reinstatement of the ban on cousin marriage may not only help isolated communities become more integrated but would also have a positive health benefit by reducing the possibility of genetic abnormalities—a report from Redbridge found that 20 per cent of child deaths occurred because the parents were related. Moreover, it is not just a question of religion; a large part of the failure to assimilate is cultural. The freedom to ask awkward questions is paramount. It should be the responsibility of the political class to tackle honour-based abuse and ask hard questions in order to prevent similar tragedies. Liberal apologists have made it extremely difficult to talk about this; their moral cowardice means we will only hear more cases like that of Banaz Mahmod. We must speak out against archaic kinship systems and cultural isolation, and encourage Western values. Only in this way can we work towards a sensible society.
