Lots of ships went down, Titanic had a bit more mystique to it for whatever reason. Supposed ground breaking tech at the time, cultural resonance amplified in movies/folklore. I might go see it if I had money to burn. Though now I'd probably just choose to watch it on TV
I was there 3 and half years and never visited once. I was working the couple times others went and I never bothered going. I told myself I'd go, then just didn't in all that time as the thought was a bit haunting! I think I would have went if I was asked when my mates went but as I said I was working and they never went back again.
They are going to reconstruct the Titan sub, who pays for this, who gives a toss anyway, what will they learn? Don’t try to go to the bottom of the ocean in a cornflake box
There's still a lot of interest in the Olympic. People who are interested still go and visit the White Swan in Alnwick or Cutlers Hall in Sheffield where elements of her interior are preserved. People pay a lot of money for items that were used on board. Royal Caribbean have even modelled parts of the interior of the ship Millenium on her interior. There are loads of blogs and online discussions about her. If she hadn't been scrapped, and kept in close to her original condition (by the time she was scrapped she'd been refitted at least twice and served as a troop ship), I can see the Olympic being a popular tourist attraction now.
Using that term reminds me that I thought a while ago about it being about time that some idiot that wants to find something to be offended about complained about ships, cars etc. being referred to as 'she' . . . . something that we've always done Let's hope that nobody as described reads this, eh
Hadn't thought about that. I apologise in advance for making such assumptions if anyone is offended on behalf of the Olympic.
To be honest it makes me sick that so many people assume that ships gender! For all we know it could be a them! I want to see a trawler that's a them that only carries fisherthems, then it would all feel more woke!
I am unrepentant! Another tradition is to consider ships as female, referring to them as ‘she’. Although it may sound strange referring to an inanimate object as ‘she’, this tradition relates to the idea of a female figure such as a mother or goddess guiding and protecting a ship and crew. Another idea is that in many languages, objects are referred to using feminine or masculine nouns. This is less common in English which tends to use gender-neutral nouns, however referring to ships as ‘she’ may refer to far more ancient traditions. https://www.iwm.org.uk/history/why-do-ships-have-a-gender#:~:text=Another tradition is to consider, protecting a ship and crew. (just Googled "is it wrong to call a ship she")
Much like the Titanic imo. The dimensions, design and fittings of the Titanic are totally documented and there's endless video of it before and after it sank. Nothing new can possibly be learned from people going to look at it. They can pass it off as scientific research, a tribute to the dead or any number of things but it's just normal human fascination and curiosity in reality. Just because it's possible to look at wrecks and other tragedies doesn't mean you should.
Interesting research they did as to what is eating the Titanic. A bacteria that they discovered that is only on the wreck itself. It is even named after the Titanic. Halomonas titanicae is a gram-negative, halophilic species of bacteria which was isolated in 2010 from rusticles recovered from the wreck of the RMS Titanic.[1] It has been estimated by Henrietta Mann, one of the researchers that first isolated it, that the action of microbes like Halomonas titanicae may bring about the total deterioration of the Titanic by 2030.[2] While the bacteria have been identified as a potential danger to oil rigs and other man-made objects in the deep sea, they also have the potential to be used in bioremediation to accelerate the decomposition of shipwrecks littering the ocean floor. But like you say, there is no need for anybody to actually physically go down for a nose about, especially when considering the risks and costs. Ive no problem with a robot popping down and taking bits of the wreck for research. But for to go looking for trophies and take photos of personal belongings leaves a nasty taste.
I agree. Years ago our local rag announced that the local tec college had acquired a piece of moon rock and it would be on display for a limited time. So I went to look at it. Why? Curiosity and vanity I suppose; vanity because I could then be smug (sorry mate) about being one of few people out of the worlds population to have seen the actual object close up. And curiosity to confirm it really did look the same as the photographs. However, the moon rock was on display just a few hundred yard from where I lived. Had my journey required public transport to a different town I would probably not have bothered (that’s because I’m lazy!) I can’t speak for the people who put themselves at risk to view the Titanic but in my case, as I’ve said, it would be curiosity and vanity. It would make for good conversation in the pub! As it turned out, the local rag had got it wrong yet again and I didn’t get to see the moon rock.
I've seen moon rock from my back garden mate ... ... usually after dark and from quite a distance, but it's there
This has brought back a random memory, that is very vague. At some point in my late teenage years I was on holiday with mates. I think it might have been downhill mountain biking in Austria, but could be wrong. We were in digs and it had a bidet. None of us had a clue. So we nominated one lad to try it while we all watched (it was a long time ago ok, and it was the sort of ****e lads did). Water blasted out hot somehow and he jumped 2 foot in the air screaming. 3 of us rolling around laughing. Wish my memory was better, cant remember the lads I was with that well there was about 10 of us went and I can remember 2 clearly. I have had a life long dislike of cameras, now I see how stupid I am.
