I used to have an Irish Wolfhound. Great temperament, really good with the kids. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0C3ISiZ4W04
I would recommend a Yorkshire Terrier. I have a 10 month old minature one. I took 3 weeks of obedience classes and she follows my instructions very well. Basically, you keep giving them treats until they do what you want, where you want. The only way you can get them to not chew your sofa is to make sure you stimulate them. If you leave a young dog on it's own for hours on end, they get bored and chew your sofa. Make sure you get your dog microchipped just in case it gets lost and also consider pet insurance as vet bills can be large. Good luck with your choice.
We got a black lab from a Labrador rescue centre 18 months ago. We've got 2 young kids and had to wait a few weeks for the right dog - one that had lived with young kids before. We got her on the understanding that my stepson would do the morning walk and I'd do the late one, needless to say he has not once got up early to take her out, but hey, I think I knew that would be the case. Anyway, the dog is amazing, beautiful nature, perfect with the kids and I can barely remember not having her. Couldn't ask for a better dog, unless there's one out there that bags up it's own crap. Check out LRRSE on line.
Staffies are great dogs and very gentle with kids. But when it comes to other dogs you just dont know what they will do. Border terriers are great dogs too and far better temperament towards othe dogs.
Not sure about that suggestion. Can be stubborn buggers and are known to wet the bed if they drink too much. Don't groom themselves very well either and always sniff out ugly bitches!
I had a Staffy... my father won her by mistake (Pub Dog called Sky Sports) in a poker game best dog I ever knew wonderful animal. From a farming background where I was in contact with many breeds this dog was by far the best which surprised me. Still I had to shot it
Cheers northolt never seen that option on the phone version. Must definitely will be using that more often.
As a vet student, I'd recommend you go to a local animal shelter and choose your dog there. You can always tell which dog would be best by the way it interacts with your kids
superdoopahoopsa - i really wanted to do this but was told re my cats, get a puppy that grows up with them otherwise with a dog from a shelter you have no idea on its history and it might be cat muncher... Don't really want to keep getting dogs from a shelter on a trial and error basis to see if they eat my cats and I don't think taking my cats to the dog shetlter to see how they interact is going to work... As a student Vet what would you suggest? To other completely disinterested 606's who were hoping to read about QPR - sorry once the footy starts again i will refrain from such posts.
i want to thank all my fellow not606,s the consensus of opinion seems to be to let the kids have a dog,so its off to the shelter,if i get one that can lick his own bollocks i will call him joey as a show of affection
One of my kids wants a "Sausage dog" which is odd as hes quite nervous around dogs. Ive had 5 boxers and 1 staffie all of which were adorable, but my next dog when the kids are older will be a British Bulldog
We've had a Staffordshire Bull terrier pup for six months now, and he is very intelligent and the children love him to bits. Apparently Staffies are the second most compatiable dogs to be around children. As recommended by the British Kennel Club. Only problem we have at the moment, is the dog is the randiest thing going on four legs. Wer'e daren't bend over in our house, as the dog takes any chance to have a hump at one of us. Took him for a walk a few days ago, and let him off the lead. Didn't realise there were three dogs the other side of the field squaring up to each other, and then a fight started. My dog goes running over to the fight, and then starts trying to hump anything that's moving.... God I didn't know where to look Stan
